USA Cricket, led by chairman Venu Pisike, is in the best possible position it has ever been in, with the latest achievement being qualification for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 World Cup to take place next year.
Recently, the USA U-19 team went unbeaten in the qualifiers at the Param Veers Sports facility to land a position at the World Cup. They played unbeaten in their six games, getting wins against arch rival Canada, Bermuda and Argentina.
This success for the U-19 team came on the back of an impressive performance in the West Indies Rising Stars U-19 tournament in the Caribbean. The USA was good enough to send two teams, with USA one finishing second to Barbados.
Prior to this, they had visited South Africa to play in their domestic tournament, and they went on to win it. They will now go into the World Cup looking to be very competitive and not be a walkover.
The USA women’s U-19 team has also been returning their best results and only recently defeated West Indies U-19 in a series at the St Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground, University of the West Indies Sports and Physical Education Centre (UWI SPEC) in St Augustine by a 3-2 margin in the six-match series.
Pisike, speaking to Guardian Media, heaped praises on the development programme.
“We have an excellent Pathways programme and it is clearly bearing fruit. Everyone in the different divisions have been working very hard and we are all proud of what we are seeing at the youth level,” said Pisike, whose USA Cricket team includes chief executive officer (CEO) Johnathan Atkeison and operations manager Golam Syed.
Earlier this year at the ICC awards, the USA senior men’s team won the award for the best display by an Associate nation. This came because of their historic victory over Pakistan at the T20 World Cup in New York.
By virtue of their performances at the last World Cup, they have already qualified for the next one.
The senior team also recently won the North American Cup in the Cayman Islands. This tournament, held for the first time, saw teams like USA, Canada, Bermuda and Bahamas. The US proved to be a cut above the rest, taking the title easily.
The US has never before seen so much success at any level and, for USA Cricket, its augurs well for the future of the game.
