Pitchmen FC and Moruga/Tableland Samba Youths became the first two qualifiers to this year's Southern Football Association (SFA) Premier Division 'Big Six' competition after comfortable wins in their respective round-robin groups on the weekend of October 7-8.
On Saturday at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin, Pitchmen led by a hat trick from Joash Baird stormed to a 5-1 defeat of former champions Lion Heart in Group A.
Former national midfielder Andrei Pacheco and Joroan Riley added a goal each for Pitchmen while Jazeel Duntin got Lion Heart's lone reply.
More importantly for Pitchmen, the win lifted their points tally to 31 from 11 matches, 11 ahead of Point Fortin Civic Centre who have two matches in hand while Deportivo PF is third with 16 points from 11 matches.
Fourth-placed Uprising Youths with 15 points from nine matches can only attain 28 points should they win their remaining five matches, putting Pitchment out of reach and certain to finish among the top three.
In the other Group A match, Omari Cobham and his brother Jahmali Cobham were both among the goals along with Akeem Redhead to lead Point Fortin Civic Centre to a 3-0 defeat of Deportivo to remain in the second spot and on course for a 'Big Six' spot as well.
In Group B, leaders Moruga/Tableland Samba Youths got a goal each from Irvin Williams, Jeremy Spann, Atiba Charles and Kerdell Pierre in their 4-1 whipping of Moruga FC who got its lone reply from Zion Bain at Gran Chemin ground, Moruga on Sunday
With the win, their ninth from ten matches, Moruga/Tableland climbed to 28 points, five clear of Mascall Football Academy while Erin FC is the only other team that can surpass the leaders with 21 points from 11 matches, five more than fourth-placed Dream Team who only have three matches remaining.
Mascall FA was awarded a 3-0 default win over Penal Is Love Youth Movement while Erin FC slammed Merikins Youth Academy 11-0 with Darron Alexis firing in a beaver trick.
The pair of Kesean Jacob and Kamali Peters added braces for Erin FC while Kevin Seales, Leon Mitchell and Flex Lewis also got one each.
