Miscellaneous Police FC missed the chance to close the gap on leaders AC Port-of-Spain (AC PoS) to one point at the top of the 11-club T&T Premier Football League (TTPFL) Tier I Division after a battling 2-2 draw with host Terminix La Horquetta Rangers in the feature match of a double-header at the Phase II Recreation Ground, La Horquetta on Saturday night.
With the point earned, Police moved into sole possession of the second spot with 18 points from nine matches, three behind AC PoS who have played a match less, while defending champions T&T Defence Force and Tiger Tanks Club Sando both have 17 points from eight matches as well, with Rangers, a distant fifth with 13 points.
At La Horquetta, both Police and Rangers threatened in the first half with Alvin Jones going close for the Lawmen early on before he was called into action at the other end to deny Rangers captain Tyrone Charles from putting his team ahead, which was followed by a goalline clearance from fellow defender Robert Primus to keep out a Ross Russell Jr attempt for Rangers as well as the half ended goalless.
However, Rangers finally broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when a right-footed effort from Isaiah Lee was completely mishandled by goalkeeper Adrian Foncette.
But, that lead only lasted nine minutes before Primus headed home the Lawmen’s equaliser off the far post from a well-flighted Joevin Jones left-sided free-kick, just outside the 18-yard box.
The former USA-Major League Soccer-based Jones then buried a trade-mark left-footed free-kick to put Police ahead in the 77th minute, and his strike looked well set to give his team all three points, until three minutes into time added-on when team-mate Willis Plaza, attempted headed clearance from a Josiah Edwards corner for Rangers, flew into his own net past a stunned Foncette to give the host a share of the points.
Earlier on in the opening match, veteran striker, Kevon Woodley scored a double to lead Eagles FC past Central FC 3-1 in their bottom-of-the-clash
Eagles flew out the gates from as early as the third minute through Exilus Angelo while Woodley made it 2-0 four minutes later.
Any chances of Central FC clawing their way back into the contest took a severe dent in the 74th minute when defender Cleveland Cambridge was issued a straight red card for a professional foul on Woodley, and five minutes, the latter extended the lead to 3-0 before Lewin Caballero netted an 84th consolation item.
On Friday, Isaiah Leacock fired in a hat-trick to lead AC PoS past Prison Service at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo while Club Sando edged Caledonia AIA 2-1, and Heritage Petroleum Point Fortin Civic Centre also won 2-1 over 1976 FC Phoenix.
