Keshawn Rodney produced a commanding, undefeated performance to capture the Billiards Sports Organisation of T&T’s (BSOTT) National 8-Ball Championship, which concluded on Sunday after three days of exciting competition at the Pyramid Sports Bar in Gasparillo.
Rodney emerged at the top of a competitive field of 70 players, navigating the double-elimination tournament without suffering a single defeat. His remarkable run culminated with a convincing 9-6 victory over Shivanand Bhagwat in the championship final.
Rodney’s path to the title was nothing short of impressive. He won seven consecutive matches, capturing 51 frames while conceding just 23. He opened his race to seven winners’ bracket campaign with a flawless 7-0 whitewash of reigning National Women’s 8 Ball Champion Salisha Lochan, before easing past Rajeev Maharaj 7-2. He then defeated BSOTT president Reagan Low Chew Tung 7-4 to continue his march through the winners’ side of the draw.
In what proved to be a preview of the championship match, Rodney comfortably dispatched Bhagwat 7-2 in Round Four before overcoming one of his toughest challenges of the tournament, edging reigning National 9-Ball Champion Clint Bachan 7-5 to secure his place in the final.
Bhagwat’s journey to the title match was considerably more demanding after his loss to Rodney sent him into the loser’s bracket.
He had opened his tournament in dominant fashion, recording three identical 7-3 victories over Kazim Ali, Krishendath Heeralal, and Ravi Soodeen, respectively, before meeting Rodney.
Forced to fight his way back through a slew of top players, Bhagwat responded impressively by edging Vishal Ramlogan 5-4 before demolishing Vishaal Singh 5-1 and registering wins over Shiv Motilal 5-2, Clint Bachan 5-1 and Richardson “Lallee” Mohammed 5-2, to earn a second meeting with Rodney.
However, the championship final, which was now a race to nine frames, belonged once again to Rodney. Displaying the same composure and consistency that had carried him throughout the tournament, the young champion, at just 26 years old, sealed a deserved 9-6 victory to claim his first BSOTT National 8-Ball title.
Rodney received the championship trophy along with the winner’s prize of $5,000. Bhagwat earned $3,000 and the runner-up trophy, while veteran Richardson “Lallee” Mohammed, at 61 years old, one of the oldest competitors in the field, claimed third place and $2,000. Bachan finished fourth to collect $1,000.
The quarterfinalists—Michael Lochan, Shiv Motilal, Sham Jagerssar, and Vishaal Singh—each received $500 for their performances.
Special recognition also went to Vishal Ramlogan, who was the tournament’s best-performing A-ranked player, and Ravi Babwah, who finished as the highest-placed B-ranked player, highlighting the depth of talent across all divisions of the competition.
The successful staging of the National 8-Ball Championship once again showcased the growing standard of cue sports in Trinidad and Tobago, with emerging young talent competing alongside seasoned veterans in one of the country’s premier billiards events.
Attention now turns to the next major event on the BSOTT calendar—the National Pool League (NPL) Team 10-Ball Competition, which is scheduled to break off in the coming weeks and is expected to attract another record number of teams.
