T&T’s Luca Shamsi and Jordane Dookie advanced to their respective singles quarterfinal of the Boys and Girls ITF World Tennis Tour Junior St Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association National Lotteries Authority (NLA) J30 Villa Tournament II in St Vincent and The Grenadines on Tuesday.
Shamsi secured his spot in the last-eight when he stormed past second-ranked Sam Park of England, 6-2, 6-2, to set up a clash with fifth-ranked USA’s Niklos Kumria who ousted T&T’s Kale Dalla Costa 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Byng brothers Sebastien and Zachery were also defeated in their respective round-of-16 matches by Americans, Matthew Shapiro 2-6, 2-6, and Williams Dean, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6.
When the tournament served off on Monday, Shamsi defeated Canada’s Codrington Preston 6-0, 6-1; Dalla Costa crushed host player Jaiden Bowens 6-0, 6-0; Byng (S) spanked Guyana’s Gerald Scotland 6-1, 6-2; and Byng (Z) beat Hong Kong’s Lionel Ng Ling-Fung 6-4, 6-2.
However, Beckham Sylvester was ousted by top-ranked Ettore Romeo Baggio of Brazil 1-6, 1-6; B’jorn Hall was overpowered by second-ranked Brazilian Lucca Acioly 3-6, 1-6 and Adrian Jacob was forced to retire 2-6 at the end of the first set against hometown boy Afi Lucas while Nathan Martin also retired when trailing 1-6 to fourth-ranked American Zachary Whittington.
In the boys' doubles, T&T’s Byng (Z) and Hall defeated T&T’s Shamsi and Shapiro 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 to reach the quarterfinals and were joined by Dalla Costa, and Sylvester, 7-5, 7-6(5) winners over Codrington, and Barbadian Adam King, and Martin and Martinique’s Paul Croisy who whipped Guyana’s Navindra Arjune, and Bowens 6-1, 6-3.
The other pairs featuring T&T players were both beaten, with Jacobs, and Chile’s He Wang Yong Chao losing to Park, Great Britain’s Maxim Zlobinsky 0-6, 0-6; and Byng (S), and Afi Luca, bowing out to Guatemala’s Javier Gutierrez, Arreaga, and Whittington 3-6, 6-7(4).
In the girls' Under-18 Singles, T&T’s Jordan Dookie, and Reina Alexis both received first-round byes.
However, in the second round, Alexis was blanked by Canada’s Cookie Jarvis-Tredgett 0-6, 0-6 while Dookie trounced Guyana’s Erin Tucker by the same scoreline, 6-0, 6-0 to set up a quarterfinal with Romanian Anastasia Ganja, the eight seeded player.
And in the Doubles. Dookie and USA’s Sarah Stoyanov face Alexis, and host player Afe Luca in the quarterfinals.
Last week, Dookie and her Barbadian partner Serena Bryan won the Girls Doubles final while in the singles competition, Dookie reached the quarterfinals and Alexis was beaten in the second round after both T&T girls had received first round-byes.
The local pair of Zachery Byng and B’jorn Hall was beaten in the boys' U-18 Doubles semifinals, and in the singles the T&T contingent led by Byng (S), Hall, Martin, Aaron Subero, Jacobs, Dalla Costa, and Sylvester were all beaten in the round-of-16 while Zachery Byng and Javed Dowlat were beaten in their first-round matches.
