Shannon Sports scored a nail-biting five-wicket win over Bourg Mulatresse on day two of the North Zone Cricket Council T20 Festival on Thursday evening at the Diego Martin Regional Sports Complex.
Iqwe Craig’s dominant innings of 69 not out from 44 balls enabled Shannon to take the top spot of Group Two.
Bourg Mulatresse lost three early wickets and were 23 for three after four overs, with Rasheed Mohammed (3), Anthony Durant (1), and Tri Richards (8) all back in the pavilion, with Roddy Juman taking two of the wickets.
Opener Aaron Dass tried at the top, but he too succumbed to Shannon, who won the North Zone Division Two this year. Former national Under-20 captain, Joshua Davis, bowled Dass with the score on 59 and with the score of 79 in the 11th over, trapped Keron Balbosa for one.
Kevin Holder, like his namesake Jason, who scored an unbeaten 51 for the Barbados Royals at the time across the Caribbean Sea at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, scored 53 not out from 38 balls and was supported by Mark Aparicio, who added 30. They shared in a 33-run stand.
Together, they took the score to 164 for six from their 20 overs.
Davis took two for 19 while National U-17 fast bowler Renaldo Fournillier took two for 28. Roddy Juman also took two wickets.
Shannon got off to a terrible start when Waylon George was out caught and bowled by Benny Hallal for a duck, and the wicket of Reshawn Guervara (10) pushed them back to 40 for two.
Two more wickets, Davis (32) and Nigel Benjamin, brought ‘Bourg’ back into the match but Craig took the bull by the horns.
Craig hit 69 not out with three sixes and four fours to bring Shannon back into contention.
First supported by Kelvin ‘Kunta’ John (19) and Fournillier (23 not out), Shannon reached 170 for five with one ball to spare.
Today, Brian Charles Lara, the “Prince of Port-of-Spain,” will make his way to the crease for Harvard Sports Club when it faces Ebony Sports & Cultural in their opener at 6.30 pm.
Harvard is competing in Group One alongside Combine All Stars, Santa Cruz Sports, Barataria Ball Players and Ebony Sports.
In Group Two are Glenora Sports, North Side Future Stars, last year’s runners-up, Savannah Boys, Bourg Mulatresse CCC, and Shannon Sports.
