Soca Warriors step up World Cup qualifiers prep

T&T So­ca War­riors coach Dwight Yorke and his squad are ex­pect­ed to re­sume prepa­ra­tions for their sec­ond round Con­ca­caf World Cup Group B qual­i­fi­er against St Kitts & Nevis on Fri­day at the Hase­ly Craw­ford Sta­di­um, Mu­cu­rapo, from 7.30 pm with a train­ing ses­sion at the same venue on Tues­day (June 3) from 5 pm.

The T&T squad ar­rived home on Sun­day af­ter­noon af­ter Sat­ur­day’s 4-0 loss to four-time African Na­tion Cups win­ners Ghana “Black Stars”, in their third-place play­off at Brent­ford’s GTECH Com­mu­ni­ty Sta­di­um in Eng­land, which came af­ter their 2-3 loss in their semi­fi­nal to Ja­maica at the same venue on Tues­day (May 27).

Dur­ing Tues­day’s train­ing ses­sion, Yorke is ex­pect­ed to name his fi­nal 26-man squad for the St Kitts & Newis en­counter, and among the play­ers join­ing the team at their live-in camp at Cas­ca­dia Ho­tel Con­fer­ence Cen­tre, who were not in­volved in the two match­es in Eng­land, were un­capped CF. Mon­tre­al de­fend­er Dante Sealy, the son of for­mer T&T strik­er Scott Sealy; Spar­tak Moscow strik­er Levi Gar­cia; Toron­to FC’s Tyrese Spicer; At­lanta Unit­ed’s Ajani For­tune; Stef­fen Yeates of Cana­da’s York Unit­ed; Hal­i­fax Wan­der­ers’ An­dre Ram­per­sad; Den­zil Smith of the USA’s AV Al­ta FC; and Wayne Fred­er­icks II of the Col­orado Rapids.

T&T is cur­rent­ly sec­ond in Group B qual­i­fiers with four points from two match­es, trail­ing Cos­ta Ri­ca, which has a max­i­mum of six points af­ter a 2-2 draw at home to St Kitts & Nevis and a 7-1 win on the road against Ba­hamas.

At the end of the round-robin se­ries, the top two teams will ad­vance to the next stage of the Con­ca­caf World Cup qual­i­fiers.

Fol­low­ing Fri­day’s match ver­sus St Kitts & Nevis, the So­ca War­riors will then play away to Cos­ta Ri­ca on Tues­day, June 10, from 9 pm.

Mean­while, St Kitts & Nevis foot­ball team warmed up for its clash with T&T with a 3-0 loss to St Vin­cent and the Grenadines at the Samuel Williams Sport­ing Com­plex in Ver­childs, Bas­seterre, St Kitts/Nevis, on Sun­day (May 25).

For the vis­it­ing St Vin­cent and The Grenadines, ranked 172nd in the FI­FA world rank­ings, Cla­iron Haynes scored a dou­ble in the 63rd and 74th min­utes, while An­nashime Springer was al­so on tar­get in the 67th in a 14-minute sec­ond-half blitz.

Both teams were us­ing the match­es as part of their prepa­ra­tions for the re­sump­tion of their World Cup qual­i­fi­er with St Vin­cent and The Grenadines to face An­guil­la on June 4 be­fore meet­ing Puer­to Ri­co on June 10.
