Out-of-favour West Indies opener Jeremy Solozano scored a double hundred (his second hundred of the season) as the Powergen batsman pounded the Victoria bowlers on day one of the T&T Cricket Board Premiership Division One round five fixture in Barrackpore. But it wasn’t the only double hundred of the day; another out-of-favour batsman, Evin Lewis, blasted 200 for Bess Motors Marchin Patriots against Merryboys.
Solozano, who also lost favour with the T&T Red Force before moving to the Windward Islands Volcanoes, hit a fluent 206 decorated with 22 fours and five sixes. Solozano, who is attempting to regain his spot with the Red Force, shared in a 249-run opening stand with his partner, current Red Force opener Cephas Cooper, who scored his second hundred in a show of continued form this season.
Cooper scored 123 with 20 fours and two sixes as he continued his fine form this season. Before this match, Cooper had scores of 150 (against Preysal, Round One), 87 (against Prisons, Round Two), 85 (against Queen’s Park, Round Three), and 46 and 12 not out (against Central Sports Yorkshire, Round Four). Cooper and Solozano made a mockery of the Victoria bowling attack, which boasted reputed bowlers Eric Garcia, Chadeon Raymond, and Damion Joachim.
After the opening partnership onslaught, Powergen got minor contributions of 36 from Dejourn Charles and 32 from Akeil Cooper as they totalled 450 for five declared. At the close of play, Victoria was 66 for one.
At Marchin Recreation Ground in Charlieville, Lewis continued his rampaging form. It was a second consecutive hundred for Lewis, who scored 106 against Prisons last week. The attacking left-handed batsman plundered 15 fours and 15 sixes, scoring 200 from just 144 balls as Bess Motors Marchin Patriots reached 351 for three in response to Merryboys’ 139 all out earlier in the day.
At the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair, Port-of-Spain, Red Force batsman Jyd Goolie, who was called up to the West Indies side last year, and West Indies batsman Amir Jangoo also scored hundreds as Queen’s Park Cricket Club continued to roll through the league. Jangoo scored 100 and Goolie scored 122, sharing in a 104-run third-wicket partnership. The Parkites were 338 for four at the close in response to Preysal’s 86 all out, after the Couva team was outclassed by Bryan Charles (4-30) and Kyle Ramdoo (3-21) earlier in the day.
