St Hillaire speeds to historic 300m victory

T&T's Dwight St Hillaire of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ken­tucky (UK) had a record-break­ing start to his sea­son, win­ning the men's 300 me­tres in a time of 32.70 sec­onds, the fourth-fastest time in col­le­giate his­to­ry at the Car­di­nal Clas­sic in Louisville, Ken­tucky, USA on Sat­ur­day.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympian broke his own school record of 32.83, to lead in a sweep by UK "Wild­cats" with four more Wild­cats fin­ish­ing with all-time top-10 times for Ken­tucky, ac­cord­ing to the school's web­site, in the timed fi­nal on the track at the Nor­ton Health Care Sports and Learn­ing Cen­tre.

St Hillaire crossed first in sec­tion one of three, ahead Lance Lang, who was run­ner-up with a time of 33.04, the sec­ond fastest in the school's his­to­ry. Kennedy Light­ner was third in the race (33.07) and now third-fastest for Ken­tucky all-time. Ja­cob Smith fin­ished in fourth (33.86) earn­ing a spot as the fifth-quick­est 300m run­ner in UK his­to­ry, and last­ly Langston Jack­son fin­ished fifth (34.28) for the sixth-best 300m spot in UK his­to­ry.

St Hillaire lat­er com­bined with Light­ner, Lang and Bri­an Faust to form Ken­tucky's squad A team and went on to win the 4x400m re­lay event with a 3:12.10-clock­ing. He ran the sec­ond leg to help his team top sec­tion one of three in the timed fi­nals, to beat sec­tion two win­ner, Ken­tucky's B squad of Ken­roy Williams, Smith, Beck O'Daniel and Ja­cob Sob­o­ta in­to sec­ond place with 3:20.24. In third place was East­ern Ken­tucky (Drew Sawyers, Bruce Fa­vors, An­drew Moss, Liam Kaune), sec­ond in sec­tion one, with 3:28.67.
