St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph, swept the prizes at stake on the final day of the East Zone Secondary Schools Volleyball League, which took place at Aranjuez Secondary School on Sunday (November 1).
The school, known for its exploits in football and other sports, dominated the proceedings in the Open Girls, the Under-17 Division, and the Under-15 Division on a day of only finals.
The Convent girls first took the U-15s’ crown by disposing of El Dorado West Secondary in straight sets 2-0. In the opener, the St Joseph’s girls demolished their counterparts 25-9. And later, they refused to prolong the proceedings by claiming the second set, 25-16.
The result was an expected eruption of wild celebration, which they took straight to the Under-17 division, where the school clashed with St George’s College. The Barataria School has built up a name from previous exploits on the volleyball courts, but this time they had to settle for the runner-up prize, as the Convent girls centred on a 25-13 victory in the first set that ensured they had one hand on the crown.
Victory in the under-17s was completed soon after with an equally convincing 25-16 triumph in the second set.
Meanwhile, the school’s third title of the day came at the expense of St. Augustine High School in the Open Girls division. The senior St. Joseph Convent girls, already confident from the successes of their U-15 and U-17 teams, made a strong impression in the match.
First, they brushed aside their St Augustine opponents 25-5 for a 1-0 lead, and moments later they claimed the overall win 25-9 for their third title of the tournament.
The achievement comes on the heels of the successes of Presidentation College of Chaguanas and Chaguanas South Secondary Schools, which took the third-place awards in the East Zone of the Boys Open and Open Girls play-offs. Due to the small number of schools in the Central Zone, both were allowed to play in the East Zone.
