The rail car from T&T, driven by Andy Bissessar of the Sheldon Bissessar Party Time racing team, proved to be the biggest crowd-pleaser and winner at the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Clun (GMR&SC) International Drag Meet, dubbed 1320 Heat, on Sunday at South Dakota Circuit in Guyana.
Bissessar, who was on a team that included Jagdeo “Mad Cow” Seecharran (Nissan Skyline), Micheal Mathurine (Hyabusa bike) and Ian Atherly (Kawasaki Bike), won the Unlimited category and also made the first-ever seven-second 1/4 mile pass in Guyana producing a new Guyana track record of 7.9 seconds. That record would set the tone of the weekend as the rest of the competition would be forced to play catch up, including Team Mohamed of Guyana who owns the ex Ekanoo Racing GTR from Bahrain which is driven by Terrence Cox of Dallas TX.
In 2017, this GTR held the record as the world’s fastest GTR with a time of 7.0 which was done in Bahrain. The GTR also had the Guyana track record with a time of 8.0 seconds until it was taken away by Bissessar with the 7.9 seconds 1/4 mile time.
And when they finally caught each other on the line, the battle was set with Bissessar coming out on top defeating Terrence Cox and the Team Mohamed GTR, the defending champion. The GTR put up a fight but shed pieces of its gearbox down the track and was unable to cross the finish line.
Still, the most exciting battle of the day came against the Mad Dog Toyota Supra driven by Guyana’s top driver Deryck Jaisingh. It was the race that thrilled those in attendance. Bissessar spun the tires at the start and had to run down the Supra to take the close win just at the finish line. He said there was a real fight to catch the Supra.
With the race day wins, Bissessar dominated and claimed the Unlimited Class win at the event.
“It was great to see the GMR&SC and Team Mohamed’s doing work on the track with the launchpad and the paved area. When we came last year we couldn’t get any traction to make a good run, but this time we can run a 7.9 because the track was prepped much better.
“We can do even better here (in Guyana) because at home we run 7.2 but there is a difference because of a better-prepped track at Wallerfield. With some work on this track at South Dakota, we can be back and better the 7.9,” said Bissessar, who now has 1/4 mile drag racing track records in three countries. Guyana, Grenada and St Vincent.
There was also an Unlimited Bike class win for Joel Bruce who rode T&T’s Micheal Mathurine’s Hyabusa bike.
