The battle for the top position in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) continues Saturday with two unbeaten teams, San Juan North Secondary and Naparima College, facing tricky oppositions from 3.30 pm.
Yet to taste defeat after five matches, Naparima College will be up against Arima North Secondary, known as the 'Dial Dynamos', a team with a rich football legacy in the SSFL that is worth fighting for and which will therefore be giving it 100 per cent as they seek to return to past glory.
Arima's getting back to top-flight schools football and entertaining the best, has also been a relief and a breath of fresh air for football fans in the east after two traditionally competitive teams, El Dorado East, known as 'The Blue Thunder' and St Augustine's 'Green Machine', were relegated to the Championship Division.
The ‘Dial Dynamos’ only loss to date came against San Juan 1-0 at their Arima Velodrome, but despite surprisingly holding their own against some of the big guns, including Presentation College (San Fernando), last year's League champions St Benedict's College, St Mary's College and Trinity College East, today may be their hardest test as they coming up against an opponent that has won the national InterCol title eight times and the South Zone InterCol crown an amazing 16 times.
Naparima manager, Percy Samlalsingh, said that in spite of Arima's impact on the League so far. his team will continue to play their game, "We have been successful in what we are doing so far, so there is no need for us to change. You don't change a winning formula. I think we have to focus on converting our chances because everybody wants to beat Naparima."
Meanwhile, San Juan North have a date with Fatima College, last year's national InterCol winners, at home and will be full of confidence as they are coming off a win at the expense of Arima North, courtesy of a Lindell Sween strike. The Bourge Malatresse men have been clinical to date, beating St Benedict's 4-3 at home, Queen's Royal College (QRC) 2-1, Presentation College and Pleasantville Secondary.
On the other hand, Fatima will be eager to get back to their winning ways and to resurrect their aspirations of defending the title as after a perfect unbeaten start to the season, they dropped two valuable points against St Benedict's in a goalless tie in their last match and now sit in third position behind the two remaining undefeated.
