T&T Under-17 cricketers are set to begin the 50-Over leg of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars U-17 Championship today against Guyana at the Inshan Ali Park in Preysal, Couva, Sunday after finishing third in the Two-Day competition, which ended on Thursday.
The home team defeated Jamaica by 10 runs at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Balmain, Couva, with Ra’ed Ali Khan setting up the win with seven wickets in the first innings.
The local U-17 cricketers will hope to take the momentum into the shorter format and defend the title they won last year under the then leadership of Brendan Boodoo, who is currently with the West Indies U-19 team, preparing for a seven-match Youth One Day International series against Sri Lanka in Antigua.
This time around, captain Saleem Khan and company will try to keep the trophy in the twin-island republic for another year.
The bowling will rely again on fastbowler Daniel Holder, who took match figures of ten for 38 against Guyana at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair, Port-of-Spain, last week, pacer Renaldo Fournillier and spinner Ra’ed Ali Khan, whose seven for 37 helped set up the win against Jamaica midweek.
Guyana, on the other hand, will be banking on Adrian Hetmyer, who scored 45 against T&T in the two-day tournament, which ended drawn. However, he will aim to represent his family with distinction, following in the footsteps of his uncle, West Indies Shimron Hetmyer, currently plying his trade with the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
The T&T team will next play Windward Islands at Gilbert Park in California, Couva on Tuesday, Jamaica at NCC on Thursday, Leeward Islands also at NCC on Saturday, and Barbados at Gilbert Park on Independence Day (August 31).
In other matches today, Windward Islands takes on Jamaica at the Queen’s Park Oval and at NCC, Leeward Islands face Barbados.
All matches begin at 9.30 am.
