The T&T trio of Krystle Esdelle, Cheyenne Chin Choy and Kameron Donald all picked up individual awards when the curtain came down on the 18th Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Senior Championship at the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall in Paramaribo, Suriname, on Sunday night.
Esdelle, 38, copped the Best Scorer award with 147 points in six matches inclusive of a tournament-best 40 in her team’s 21-25, 25-15, 25-23, 19-25, 13-15 loss to Jamaica in the final, their second loss against the same opponents in the tournament to relinquish hold of the title held since 2006.
It was the first title win for Jamaica while record eight-time champions T&T’s stranglehold on the crown came to an end after seven straight titles.
Chin Choy was the other T&T senior women’s team player to capture individual honours after she took home the Best Digger and Best Libero accolades.
Jamaican outside hitter Mychael Vernon was selected as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) after her team won their maiden title in five attempts as she had an average of 19.5 points during the tournament.
Vernon was also the Best Receiver and Outside Hitter of the tournament while her team-mates Keshan Livingston was handed the award for Best Setter, Sashalee Thomas received Best Opposite and Anesia Edwards for Second Best Middle Blocker.
The Best Server award was handed to Jannelle Curtis of Bahamas while Ketura Margaret of Suriname received the award for Second Best Outside Hitter, and Tennelle Chapman-Goodluck was handed the award for First Best Middle Blocker.
In the men’s competition, Donald was named Best Setter while Suriname’s Opposite Zefanio Breinburg was selected as the Most Valuable Player.
The MVP award was handed to Breinburg after his team won the Championship match defending their title against ten-time champion Barbados 22-25, 25-21, 29-27, 23-25, 17-15 and he had an average of 18 points during the tournament.
Breinburg was also the Best Opposite, while countrymen Anferney Schmeltz was named Best Digger and Best Libero, and Keven Sporkslede, Best Receiver.
Ryck Webb of Jamaica was recognised for Best Server and Second Outside Hitter, while his team-mate Mark Blake was named First Middle Blocker, Kyle Wilson of Bahamas, First Outside Hitter and Best Scorer and Raygid Isenia was named Second Middle Blocker.
