T&T Under-15 boys team had to settle for the bronze medal in the team competition at the 23rd Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation Cadet & Junior Championship, Cuba, yesterday.
With a place in the final at stake versus Cuba, T&T trio Derron Douglas, Jalen Kerr and Nicholas O’Young were edged out by Dominican Republic, 2-3.
Douglas made a winning start for T&T when he outlasted Andres Lora 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-3 for a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five matches series.
However, Abit Tejada rallied past O’Young 5-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-9 to get Dominican Republic level at 1-1.
Kerr restored T&T’s lead at 2-1 and on the verge of a finals appearance via his 7-11, 11-7, 15-13, 11-2 triumph over Marcos Tavarez.
But one win away from a shock result, T&T could not close out the contest as Tejada defeated Douglas 11-3, 11-9, 11-5 for a 2-2 score before Lora defeated O’Young 13-11, 11-9, 11-6 in the deciding clash.
When the competition served off on Monday T&T defeated Jamaica 3-0 in its Pool B round-robin opener.
Douglas made light work of Jordan Campbell 11-6, 11-8, 11-6, but Kerr was made to work for his win over Derrick Francis, 11-5, 12-14, 7-11, 11-6,11-5 while O’Young eased past Ainsley Dehaney 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.
The Cubans also swept past Jamaica 3-0 on Monday to set up a group decider with T&T yesterday, with both teams already assured of a semifinal spot.
However, T&T found the going tough against the Cubans with Douglas, a 5-11, 7-11, 3-11 loser to Brian Mena; Kerr going under to Adrian Perez 7-11, 4-11, 6-11 and O’Young, beaten 6-11, 6-11, 4-11 by Andy Pupo.
In Pool A, Dominican Republic dispatched St Lucia and St Vincent and The Grenadines, both by 3-0 margins while St Lucia took second with victory over its Caribbean neighbours..
