U-15 ping pong boys get bronze

T&T Un­der-15 boys team had to set­tle for the bronze medal in the team com­pe­ti­tion at the 23rd Caribbean Re­gion­al Ta­ble Ten­nis Fed­er­a­tion Cadet & Ju­nior Cham­pi­onship, Cu­ba, yes­ter­day.

With a place in the fi­nal at stake ver­sus Cu­ba, T&T trio Der­ron Dou­glas, Jalen Kerr and Nicholas O’Young were edged out by Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic, 2-3.

Dou­glas made a win­ning start for T&T when he out­last­ed An­dres Lo­ra 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-3 for a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five match­es se­ries.

How­ev­er, Abit Te­ja­da ral­lied past O’Young 5-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-9 to get Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic lev­el at 1-1.

Kerr re­stored T&T’s lead at 2-1 and on the verge of a fi­nals ap­pear­ance via his 7-11, 11-7, 15-13, 11-2 tri­umph over Mar­cos Tavarez.

But one win away from a shock re­sult, T&T could not close out the con­test as Te­ja­da de­feat­ed Dou­glas 11-3, 11-9, 11-5 for a 2-2 score be­fore Lo­ra de­feat­ed O’Young 13-11, 11-9, 11-6 in the de­cid­ing clash.

When the com­pe­ti­tion served off on Mon­day T&T de­feat­ed Ja­maica 3-0 in its Pool B round-robin open­er.

Dou­glas made light work of Jor­dan Camp­bell 11-6, 11-8, 11-6, but Kerr was made to work for his win over Der­rick Fran­cis, 11-5, 12-14, 7-11, 11-6,11-5 while O’Young eased past Ains­ley De­haney 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.

The Cubans al­so swept past Ja­maica 3-0 on Mon­day to set up a group de­cider with T&T yes­ter­day, with both teams al­ready as­sured of a semi­fi­nal spot.

How­ev­er, T&T found the go­ing tough against the Cubans with Dou­glas, a 5-11, 7-11, 3-11 los­er to Bri­an Mena; Kerr go­ing un­der to Adri­an Perez 7-11, 4-11, 6-11 and O’Young, beat­en 6-11, 6-11, 4-11 by Andy Pupo.

In Pool A, Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic dis­patched St Lu­cia and St Vin­cent and The Grenadines, both by 3-0 mar­gins while St Lu­cia took sec­ond with vic­to­ry over its Caribbean neigh­bours..
