Jaysean Wells, Malik Bain, Keyah Roberts and Karissa Mohammed mounted to winner's row over regional counterparts on the opening day of the RBC 47th Junior Tennis Tournament at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua.
Bain, playing on court one, took three sets to overcome his St Lucian counterpart Jelani Flemius 4-1, 1-4, 10-6 in his opening round-robin affair of the boys' 10 and under division. However, Wells was more commanding in the boys' 14 and under category, battling to a 5-4(9) triumph in the first set over Guyana's Jose Rodrigues, before sealing the victory with a 4-1 triumph in the second set.
Earlier, the fifth-seeded Wells held off his countryman Noah Blanc in straight sets, 5-3, 4-0, and promises to be a force to be reckoned with today when the action continues.
Meanwhile, Roberts, the girls' 12 and under ace who went into action yesterday as the second-ranked player in her age bracket, took care of St Lucia's Joelle Habib, 4-1, 4-2, while Karissa Mohammed produced an almost flawless 4-0, 4-2 win over Amia Marie of St Lucia in the girls' 14 and under division on court six.
In that category (girls 14 and under) there were also wins for T&T's Lilly Mohammed over Cyra Ramcharan 4-1, 5-3; Makeda Bain over Charde Sylvester 4-0, 4-0; and Madison Khan over Isobel Alleyne 4-0, 4-0.
In the boys' equivalent there were victories for Gabriel Mansoor over Joshua Mitchell 4-0, 4-2; Jacob Jacelon over Joshua Mitchell 4-0, 4-0; Christopher Khan over Ridello Boodhai 4-1, 5-3; Mansoor over Javed Dowlat 4-0, 4-2; Jack Brown over Justin Horsford 0-4, 4-2, 10-5; Oliver Harragin over Boodhai 4-2, 4-1; Darius Rahaman over Horsford 4-2, 4-2; and Brown over Josh Mohammed 4-0, 4-0.
