A charter flight is currently being arranged to transport the West Indies senior men's T20 cricket team safely out of India, where it has been stranded since Monday's defeat against India in a Super 8s match, confirming their exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The team has been stranded in India due to international airspace restrictions arising from security concerns in the Gulf region; however, yesterday Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed the team's expected departure is scheduled within the next 24 hours subject to final air traffic approvals.
This follows a "high-level" call held on Thursday involving CWI, International Cricket Council (ICC) officials, a representative of team management, and a representative of the players.
Before the CWI update, head coach Daren Sammy made his frustration public when he made a post on the social media site X, which read, "I just wanna go home."
Four hours after his initial post, Sammy made another public plea for feedback, posting, 'At least an update; tell us something. Today, tmw, next week. It's been 5 days.'
Six hours after that post, Sammy followed up with, "Got an update. That's all wi wanted."
CWI assures that it has remained in constant dialogue with the players, team management, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) since their last match, reiterating that the situation remains complex and fluid. CWI assured the public that every precaution is being taken to ensure the safe return of the team to the Caribbean. It said the team remains safe and well as arrangements continue to be finalised and that the safe return of players and staff remains the highest priority.
