Clint Latch­man copped the "Most Goals" award as Young Li­ons roared to the Open­ing Day round-robin ti­tle when the sec­ond an­nu­al Five-A-Side Bas­ket­ball Court Foot­ball League host­ed by Bel­lisi­ma Events kicked off at the L'Anse Mi­tan Recre­ation Grounds on No­vem­ber 4.

In the four-team tour­na­ment de­cider, Latch­man got the lone goal, his sec­ond in as many match­es to se­cure a 1-0 win for Young Li­ons over Dark FC.

Ear­li­er in the semi­fi­nals, Young Li­ons bat­tled past Point Cumana 2-1 while Dark FC got the bet­ter of Big Yard FC 1-0.

And when league match­es kicked off on Fri­day night at the same venue, Young Li­ons con­tin­ued their win­ning ways via an­oth­er 1-0 tri­umph against Crazy Mon­key's thanks to a strike from Nakil Jules, while Smith Hill FC and Dark FC bat­tled to a goal­less draw in the open­er.

On Sat­ur­day (No­vem­ber 11), Point Cumana comes up against Scor­pi­on FC in the fi­nal match of Week One.

The win­ners of the league will col­lect $5,000 while the run­ners-up will get $3,000 and the third-placed fin­ish­ers $1,000.

Ac­cord­ing to Sh­eryll De Bique, founder of the Bel­lis­si­ma Or­gan­is­ing Com­mit­tee which al­so com­pris­es Ak­il Mark, the com­pe­ti­tion which had its first stag­ing last year was born out of the need to fos­ter a pos­i­tive av­enue for the young­sters in the com­mu­ni­ty.

She said, "In the re­cent past there had been an in­crease in crime among the youths in our com­mu­ni­ty and Ak­il (Mark) and I came to­geth­er and de­cid­ed that we want­ed to cre­ate a peace­ful and pos­i­tive en­vi­ron­ment in a sub­stan­tial com­mu­ni­ty through the use of sport whether it was foot­ball, net­ball or bas­ket­ball.

"We had a suc­cess­ful net­ball tour­na­ment as well as a foot­ball com­pe­ti­tion, but the bas­ket­ball com­pe­ti­tion didn't re­al­ly get off the ground, and this year we are back at it again with the foot­ball com­pe­ti­tion.

"So far we have six teams in­volved, and we are hop­ing that by the clos­ing date of reg­is­tra­tion on Sat­ur­day, No­vem­ber 18, we will be able to add four more teams to the com­pe­ti­tion, and we are do­ing all this with­out the sup­port any ma­jor spon­sors, ex­cept Cap­til Sig­nal Com­pa­ny Sig­nal Lim­it­ed who has been part of our jour­ney from day one."

Match­es are played on Fri­days and Sat­ur­days un­til fur­ther no­tice.
