Your editorial of December 9 ("Punishing England for media insults") dealt quite objectively with the awarding of the 2018 World Cup and the role the media may or may not have played in the process. A disappointment was that no mention was made of the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
In October 2007, Fifa ended the traditional rotation for the awarding of the World Cup and in Sydney in May 2008, at its 58th congress, changed the awarding to two competitions to allow "extra planning" for those countries bidding for a "better economic result."
Of the countries interested in holding the games only Qatar needed 12 years to complete its bid. Strange ent? Of the original group, Mexico and Indonesia withdrew, leaving Australia, Japan/Korea, Qatar and the USA to compete. Outside of Qatar, the remaining three countries were capable of holding the tournament in two years.
Passing strange I say.
