The alleged abuse by the two police officers in San Fernando of a seemingly helpless individual is rather upsetting but revealing to say the least.Upsetting because this man is clearly a very ill and weak individual and if the police are sworn to protect and serve then these two officers are certainly operating against the police mandate.Revealing because it begs of the question, had this incident not been recorded by a passerby then what would have come of it?
Even, if there were reports of this incident without a video recording, would the authorities concerned take any action? There have been many reports of police brutality in the past. We have seen the end product of alleged beatings and torture by the police.
It is left to the imagination what happens behind closed doors in police stations and holding bays with this kind of evidence now available. What has become of all these investigations? It may have been very easy to say in the past that this was a case of the perpetrator's (police) words against the victim (ordinary citizens). This man in the video in the High Street incident definitely was in no position to make any fuss about this incident. It would have gone unnoticed without the video footage.
This is very damaging to the image of the police, even at this time where many good officers are trying to change the poor image of the service presently held by citizens. It is high time that serious action be taken against such rogue officers and not just mediocre action as a transfer to another station. The image of the TTPS cannot change by shifting the weight from one foot to the other.
