T&T's boys' pool "A" team bounced back from a 1-4 defeat from Bermuda to clinch a 3-2 win over hosts Jamaica to advance to the semifinal of the Caribbean Area Squash Association Junior Team Championships in Kingston on Tuesday. The T&T boys, who were seeded fourth, suffered the lost earlier to Bermuda when Nku and Mandela Patrick, Nicholas Caddle, and Christian Edghill all failed to win their games. Nku was squashed by D'Vario Thompson 3-1 (1-11, 5-11, 18-16, 5-11) while his older brother, Mandela, went under to Noah Browne 3-0 (8-11, 2-11, 9-11). Caddle and Edghill both went down 3-0 to Dylan Pratt (3-11 in three sets) and Beau Orchard (3-11, 10-12, 5-11) respectively. T&T's only victory from this team round came from Jonathan Blanc, who got the better of Ryan Hopkins 3-1 (14-12, 11-7, 5-11, 11-4).
But there was no need to despair, as the boys shrugged off their loss to triumph the home team in their next match. The Patrick brothers went back to their usual winning ways as they both won their matches 3-0 with Nku beating Jake Mahfood (11-5, 11-5, 12-10). Mandela then exacted revenge over Ashante Smith, who caused him to exit the quarterfinal stage of the individual component of the Championships. Mandela was the boss this time around however, discarding Smith 11-6, 11-4, 11-9. It was a case of déjà vu for Chad Salandy who trounced Stephan Morrison 11-9, 11-9, 3-11, 11-4.
Yesterday evening the boys took on pool "B" winning team, Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), which is seeded third. The girls continued their unbeaten form in the tournament by dominating Bermuda 4-1. The national girls', who are seeded third, barely gave their Bermudan opponents a chance to reply in their matches. Reigning two-time girls' under-17 champion, Charlotte Knaggs, kicked things off with a 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-6) win over Emma Keane. Marie Claire Barcant copped the girls' second win by dismissing Olivia Lindsey 3-1 (11-8, 6-11, 11-5, 12-10). So far T&T's girls have won each of their round robin matches. On Monday the girls cruised past both second-seeded Jamaica and Barbados (including two walkovers) in 4-1 sweeps. Yesterday afternoon, the girls took Guyana who is seeded first.
