After 38 years in the entertainment business, calypsonian Denyse Plummer yesterday added the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) to her list of achievements for her contribution to culture in T&T. Plummer, who is now in New York, was said to have cried when she received the news that she was an official recipient in that category. The T&T Guardian contacted her manager and sister, Arlene Plummer, who was also elated and revealed that she was so proud of her sister. Plummer said Denyse began her professional career as a performer at the age of 18 when she did the nightclub circuit at the Chaconia Inn owned at the time by Ken Duval.
"I know what my sister has been through in the calypso arena and in general as a performer and she has had her down moments but she also remained resilient throughout," she said. "Denyse deserves this award and I am happy ...very happy because I always hoped that someone would recognise her work as an artiste. "However, I had also hoped that recognition would not come after her death and so my wish came true. "She is alive and has been recognised for her contribution. "Denyse, I salute you and celebrate this moment and this achievement with you." Denyse Plummer's award will be accepted by her son Jesse Boocock.
