The T&T Police Service was thrown into shock and mourning yesterday, after a woman police constable killed a fellow policeman then turned the gun on herself in an apparent murder-suicide at her house in Chaguanas.
The dead officers were identified as WPC Josette Marshall and Corporal Dwight Skeete.
According to the head of Homicide South, ASP Steve Persad, at around 2.25 pm, police received a report of a homicide at the corner of Opal and Kestral Boulevard at Edinburgh 500, a stone’s throw away from the Edinburgh 500 Government Primary School.
On arrival, police discovered two bodies on the first floor of the two-storey house.
Officers believed that WPC Marshall, who worked at the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain, drew her personal 9mm firearm and fatally wounded Cpl Skeete, who worked at the Court and Process Branch in Port-of-Spain. She then turned the gun on herself. Skeete’s body was found in a bedroom while Marshall was found slumped in the corridor.
Police said further investigations would determine the cause of their deaths.
The deceased were said to be in a relationship and were involved in a domestic dispute at the time of the incident. However, police did not reveal the nature of the dispute. Shocked relatives who were at the scene also did not speak with the media as they were overwhelmed by grief. They advised others to refrain from making any comments to the media.
A large crowd gathered outside the home of the deceased during the initial investigations into the incident.
In a news release hours afterwards, Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher expressed deep sadness over the news of their deaths.
“Today, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is plunged into mourning at the brutal shooting involving two of our own. While the investigation is in its early stages and we are piecing the details together, we are deeply saddened by this incident,” Harewood-Christopher said.
The release said officers from the Community Police Department’s Central Division were on patrol in the Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas area when they were alerted by a resident that there was a shooting incident.
The officers responded, along with officers of the Homicide Bureau, and when they arrived at the address, they found the bodies of a woman and a man lying in a corridor of the house. Both were unresponsive and appeared to bear gunshot wounds.
According to the release, no motive has been identified for the incident.
Officers attached to the Homicide Bureau are continuing investigations.
