The T&T Po­lice Ser­vice was thrown in­to shock and mourn­ing yes­ter­day, af­ter a woman po­lice con­sta­ble killed a fel­low po­lice­man then turned the gun on her­self in an ap­par­ent mur­der-sui­cide at her house in Ch­agua­nas.

The dead of­fi­cers were iden­ti­fied as WPC Josette Mar­shall and Cor­po­ral Dwight Skeete.

Ac­cord­ing to the head of Homi­cide South, ASP Steve Per­sad, at around 2.25 pm, po­lice re­ceived a re­port of a homi­cide at the cor­ner of Opal and Kestral Boule­vard at Ed­in­burgh 500, a stone’s throw away from the Ed­in­burgh 500 Gov­ern­ment Pri­ma­ry School.

On ar­rival, po­lice dis­cov­ered two bod­ies on the first floor of the two-storey house.

Of­fi­cers be­lieved that WPC Mar­shall, who worked at the Po­lice Ad­min­is­tra­tion Build­ing, Port-of-Spain, drew her per­son­al 9mm firearm and fa­tal­ly wound­ed Cpl Skeete, who worked at the Court and Process Branch in Port-of-Spain. She then turned the gun on her­self. Skeete’s body was found in a bed­room while Mar­shall was found slumped in the cor­ri­dor.

Po­lice said fur­ther in­ves­ti­ga­tions would de­ter­mine the cause of their deaths.

The de­ceased were said to be in a re­la­tion­ship and were in­volved in a do­mes­tic dis­pute at the time of the in­ci­dent. How­ev­er, po­lice did not re­veal the na­ture of the dis­pute. Shocked rel­a­tives who were at the scene al­so did not speak with the me­dia as they were over­whelmed by grief. They ad­vised oth­ers to re­frain from mak­ing any com­ments to the me­dia.

A large crowd gath­ered out­side the home of the de­ceased dur­ing the ini­tial in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the in­ci­dent.

In a news re­lease hours af­ter­wards, Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Er­la Hare­wood-Christo­pher ex­pressed deep sad­ness over the news of their deaths.

“To­day, the Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice is plunged in­to mourn­ing at the bru­tal shoot­ing in­volv­ing two of our own. While the in­ves­ti­ga­tion is in its ear­ly stages and we are piec­ing the de­tails to­geth­er, we are deeply sad­dened by this in­ci­dent,” Hare­wood-Christo­pher said.

The re­lease said of­fi­cers from the Com­mu­ni­ty Po­lice De­part­ment’s Cen­tral Di­vi­sion were on pa­trol in the Ed­in­burgh 500, Ch­agua­nas area when they were alert­ed by a res­i­dent that there was a shoot­ing in­ci­dent.

The of­fi­cers re­spond­ed, along with of­fi­cers of the Homi­cide Bu­reau, and when they ar­rived at the ad­dress, they found the bod­ies of a woman and a man ly­ing in a cor­ri­dor of the house. Both were un­re­spon­sive and ap­peared to bear gun­shot wounds.

Ac­cord­ing to the re­lease, no mo­tive has been iden­ti­fied for the in­ci­dent.

Of­fi­cers at­tached to the Homi­cide Bu­reau are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
