Vets from the University of the West Indies are trying desperately trying to save a melon-headed whale that beached itself on Maracas Bay this morning.

Beachgoers say the whale was first seen shortly before 10 am.

Lifeguards on the beach towed it back into the sea and stayed for over two hours before further help arrived.

Shortly after noon, the whale was brought to shore.

Rescuers have cordoned off a part of the shoreline as they work feverishly to save the whale.

Earlier this week four whales were found in Moruga.
