Fifty-three-year-old Rosemary Harricharan was shot dead while she was asleep at her home at Champs Fleurs during the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
Her daughter, 24, was shot at as well. It is believed she was shot by the same gunman who killed her mother, but fortunately she escaped unhurt.
According to a police report, at about 1:30 am, police officers responded to a report of a shooting at Harricharan's home at Williams Street. The officers found Harricharan's lifeless body lying in a bedroom located in the eastern side of the house. Police said the woman was shot multiple times in the right side of her chest and lower left abdomen.
Guardian Media understands the woman's daughter told police that she was at home in the living room at about 1:10 am when she heard several gunshots coming from outside, in the vicinity of her mother`s bedroom, which is located at the northern side of the house. She said she called out to her mother and upon checking saw her bleeding.
The daughter also reported that the gunman allegedly followed her inside and fired several shots at her; however, he was unsuccessful as she survived the attack.
He reportedly then fled the scene through a door located at the northern side of the house, making his escape in an unknown direction.
The district medical officer visited the scene and ordered the removal of Harricharan's body pending a post-mortem examination.
The scene was processed by officers of SERU, who recovered four live rounds and four spent shells, three deformed projectiles and one brown wire of 9-millimetre ammunition.
A motive is yet to be established for the killing.
Investigations are continuing.
