Classes at the Raghunanan Road Government Primary School resumed yesterday, after Education Ministry officials and the Chaguanas Borough Corporation (CBC)moved to address a rodent issue at the school.
Education Minister Dr Michael Dowlath told Guardian Media that officials had been addressing the presence of rodents at the primary school since the reopening of the new school term.
Dowlat said officials from the corporation visited the school to conduct baiting on the compound.
“This exercise was intensified on Thursday, 15 and Friday, May 16, 2025. On Monday, May 19, 2025, evidence of rodents was found in the baiting stations installed at the school and a thorough sanitisation of the school was done to facilitate classes.”
The Education Minister said the school supervisor from the Caroni Education District Office visited the school later that day and found the compound to be in a state of readiness for the resumption of classes by students, as no rodents were found following the interventions taken.
He said, “The Ministry of Education will continue to liaise with the relevant agencies, the principal and teachers for ensuring the required health and safety measures are in place for eradicating the rodents at the school.”
One parent, Ronald Jeremy, whose child attends the school, said he spoke with an official at the school when he heard about rodents at the facility. Jeremy said he was concerned about the spread of leptospirosis and other diseases.
Other parents told Guardian Media they were happy that the Education Minister and ministry officials responded quickly to the incident, allowing classes to resume.
