A man who was shot dur­ing an al­leged po­lice-in­volved shoot­ing in Co­corite on Thurs­day night has suc­cumbed to his in­juries.

He was iden­ti­fied as Travis Hy­po­lite, of Co­corite.

Ac­cord­ing to a po­lice re­port, at about 10.15 pm, mem­bers of West­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force were on an ex­er­cise in the Co­corite area, sanc­tioned by ACP Ma­haraj and co­or­di­nat­ed by act­ing Snr Supt Hen­ry and Supt Williams, su­per­vised by In­sp Grant and Sgt Car­mona.

The of­fi­cers claimed they en­coun­tered a group of men, sev­er­al of whom were al­leged­ly armed with firearms.

On see­ing the of­fi­cers, the men al­leged­ly ran off in dif­fer­ent di­rec­tions and of­fi­cers chased af­ter them.

How­ev­er, of­fi­cers re­port­ed that they were fired up­on by one of the flee­ing sus­pects, who was al­leged­ly armed with an AK47 along a stair­way.

The of­fi­cers re­turned fire, hit­ting the sus­pect. The man was tak­en to the St James Hos­pi­tal for treat­ment suf­fer­ing from gun­shot wounds, but was pro­nounced dead.

Apart from the Ak47, po­lice al­so re­cov­ered 18 rounds of 5.56 am­mu­ni­tion from the sus­pect.

An­oth­er man, al­so of Co­corite, was held by the of­fi­cers in pos­ses­sion of a sub­ma­chine gun with 29 rounds of 9mm am­mu­ni­tion.

The firearms and am­mu­ni­tion were seized by po­lice and sent for Foren­sic analy­sis.
