A man who was shot during an alleged police-involved shooting in Cocorite on Thursday night has succumbed to his injuries.
He was identified as Travis Hypolite, of Cocorite.
According to a police report, at about 10.15 pm, members of Western Division Task Force were on an exercise in the Cocorite area, sanctioned by ACP Maharaj and coordinated by acting Snr Supt Henry and Supt Williams, supervised by Insp Grant and Sgt Carmona.
The officers claimed they encountered a group of men, several of whom were allegedly armed with firearms.
On seeing the officers, the men allegedly ran off in different directions and officers chased after them.
However, officers reported that they were fired upon by one of the fleeing suspects, who was allegedly armed with an AK47 along a stairway.
The officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. The man was taken to the St James Hospital for treatment suffering from gunshot wounds, but was pronounced dead.
Apart from the Ak47, police also recovered 18 rounds of 5.56 ammunition from the suspect.
Another man, also of Cocorite, was held by the officers in possession of a submachine gun with 29 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The firearms and ammunition were seized by police and sent for Forensic analysis.
