Two Tobago business owners have suffered losses following a fire in Scarborough yesterday.
According to reports, the fire started around 12.30pm on Castries Street, Scarborough.
One of the business owners David Kerr, of Scorpion Electronics & Records, told Guardian Media that the fire started in a downstairs room of the building. He said they started seeing and smelling smoke, but was unable to do anything to save the building and he could only salvage a few of his products.
“I got like five people to help me salvage some of my goods, so the fire already come upstairs and the heat of the fire and the smoke we were suffocating through the smoke. I will consider my losses to be at least $12,000 to $15,000 because it’s goods, my laptop and other accessories” he said.
A nearby business, owned by Edison Hercules, sustained heat and water damage.
Kerr said the relocation of fire Tenders from the Scarborough Fire Station to the Crown Point Fire Station following a fire in April this year also posed a challenge.
“We called the fire officers, everyone was on their phone calling the fire station, the police and all got on the radio and called for them, but they said they were not uptown any more, so they had to come from quite Crown Point, so they took very long to come,” he said
Two other persons had to be transported to the Scarborough General Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained while complete losses are still to be quantified.
