Guardian Media will be hosting its Flood of Relief telethon today.
The telethon will be live from 5-9 pm on CNC3 television, radio stations Akash Vani, Vibe 105.1 and Sangeet, as well as online.
This event will serve to further mobilise the national community to provide Floods of Relief for those affected by the recent flooding across Trinidad. Viewers, listeners, and readers will be encouraged to support all efforts aimed at assisting those who have suffered property damage and were traumatised by the flooding.
The public is asked to contribute to relief fund accounts set up by Republic Bank, Scotiabank, RBC Royal Bank, JMMB Bank, and First Caribbean International. Journalists from CNC3 and the T&T Guardian will provide updates on the recovery efforts in worst-hit areas during the drive.
Guardian Media personalities from television, radio, and newspaper will serve as hosts of the telethon. Representatives of the business and non-governmental community, who have been in the forefront of efforts to help those in distress, will be on hand to share their experiences and offer further help.
Entertainment will be provided by a range of performers—from the gospel, parang, calypso, chutney, steelpan, and spoken word communities—showcasing the rich musical traditions of T&T. Endorsements for the Floods of Relief telethon will also come from national and international entertainers.
During the telethon, tributes will also be paid to Mighty Shadow, who died earlier this week and was yesterday honoured by the University of the West Indies with a Doctor of Letters.
The telethon follows up on the drive launched just over one week ago by Guardian Media to encourage an immediate response to the plight of those who were caught in the floods and suffered extensive damage to their properties. The ANSA McAL Group of Companies, which includes Guardian Media, started the campaign with a $1 million contribution.
Since then, the business community has joined community groups and individuals in a massive response to the needs of those made vulnerable by the unprecedented flooding that swept over central, east and south Trinidad—from Matelot to Mayaro and the Caroni Basin as well as El Socorro south. Government agencies also mobilised to provide emergency relief.
In an effort to capture this huge outpouring of support to those in need at this time and in order to provide a single platform and vehicle for sharing critical information, the Guardian Media Group has created an initiative called Flood of Relief.
The platform provides a real-time avenue for the sharing of flood heroes, health tips and traffic alerts. It also highlighted the good of our people.
We will continue to use this medium to educate and inform the public on the resources available to those affected and open a channel through which you can respond with support which you may wish to give and the means of doing so.
