The Gran Couva Main Road continues to collapse, and Caroni Central MP Arnold Ram says the authorities are not serious about doing anything anytime soon.
At present, residents are forced to take a detour through Cameron Road, which is unable to allow the passage of heavy vehicles. Cameron Road residents told Guardian Media truck drivers still ignore the three-tonne limit sign and pass through the area with heavy vehicles as concrete mixers.
“They have mamaguyed [deceived] the people with a visit from the Ministry of Works and Transport,” MP Ram said in a telephone interview with Guardian Media.
“It falls under their purview and all they are concerned about is fixing other areas, save and except those that lie within Opposition constituencies. If it was any other area that was PNM-controlled, it would have been done already,” he alleged.
The Caroni Central MP said the residents are worried that Cameron Road may start to show some slippage.
“Very soon, that area will collapse as well,” he predicted.
MP Ram said small businesses and the cocoa industry in the area are being affected.
He also wants WASA to fix broken mains in the area but admits there is no alternative route.
Guardian Media was told a family of four who lived in the vicinity of the landslide had to vacate their home.
Relatives (who wished not to be identified) said the soil in front of the house has collapsed and the family have now moved because of safety reasons.
