A 51-year-old woman, her son and five grandchildren escaped their Sangre Grande home after it was firebombed early Thursday morning.
Police said the woman was asleep at her Picton Road Extension home around 2 am when a loud explosion woke her. She noticed the curtain at her bedroom window and her mattress were on fire.
She grabbed her five-year-old granddaughter, who was asleep in the room with her, and ran to wake her 21-year-old son, who was asleep with the other grandchildren aged 2, 6, 8 and 14.
The family managed to extinguish the blaze before it spread.
The woman reported seeing pieces of broken glass bottles, scattered channa peas and a gasoline-soaked cloth in her bedroom and kitchen. A container of gasoline was also found outside the house.
Sangre Grande police are investigating the incident as an arson attack.
