A young man described as loving and quiet was brutally killed during an altercation involving a group of men in Point Fortin yesterday morning.

De-Shawn Parson, who would have turned 21 on January 14, suffered deep wounds to his head after he was attacked with a sharp object. He died on the way to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH). Two other persons were injured but were treated and discharged from the hospital.

Police said around 1.30 am a bottle-throwing fracas involving two groups of men occurred near the roundabout along the Southern Main Road near the KFC outlet. Parson was among several persons injured, police said.

At his Fanny Village, Point Fortin home yesterday, his parents Texcita Marcano, 39, father Darren Parson, stepfather and other relatives were inconsolable.

Pointing to the incomplete paint job on her house, Marcano said her son had promised to finish painting today. Recalling the last moments with her son, she cried, “Before he leave he say ‘Mammy I will never leave you.’”

Describing him as her “spoil child,” Marcano said he was not accustomed going out but he went because his friend was going away in a few days. She said her son was not involved in the argument.

“As far as I hear he went to buy a burger from the burger cart (near KFC) and when he turned he back that was it. They hit him a bottle in his head and they stab him on his head and drag it (weapon).”

She said after waiting about 20 minutes for the ambulance, the police took her son to the Point Fortin Hospital where he was treated and transferred to the SFGH. She said he died when they reached Gonzales Village.

“He never had no bad name in the community, he never had a case, or cause to get lock up. He was everybody favourite.”

The mother said he was supposed to have started a job at Angostura in January. As the tears rolled down his cheeks, Parson said his son was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“That fellah was real loving, a God sent,” sobbed Parson, who had to seek medical attention after he saw his son’s body at the hospital.

Police have detained several suspects and investigations are continuing.
