The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has confirmed that Hurricane Tammy will remain a hurricane for a few more days while it passes near or over the Leeward Islands.
In its latest advisory, the Met Service reports that at 5:00 am today (Saturday 21 October 2023), the centre of Hurricane Tammy was located near 15.2ON 60.4OW, or about 100 km east-southeast of Dominica.
“Hurricane Tammy is now moving toward the northwest near 15 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight,” the Met Service explains in the advisory. “A turn toward the north-northwest is forecast on Sunday followed by a turn toward the north on Monday.”
“On the forecast track, the centre of Tammy will move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands through early Sunday and then move north of the northern Leeward Islands by Sunday afternoon,” it said.
The Met Service notes that maximum sustained winds are near 130 km/h with higher gusts.
“Fluctuations in intensity are possible during the next few days but Tammy is expected to remain a hurricane while it passes near or over the Leeward Islands,” the Met Service said.
It noted: “Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 km from the centre and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 km. The estimated minimum central pressure is 991 mb.”

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Dominica, Saba and St. Eustatius.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Dominica, Saba and St. Eustatius..
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Martinique and the British Virgin Islands.
There are currently no alerts, watches or warnings in effect for Trinidad and Tobago.
The Met Service says it will continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Tammy and will issue another update at 6:00 pm today, or earlier, if the situation warrants.
