London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott is in the final of the men’s javelin event at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. Walcott did not hit the automatic standard of 84.50 metres but produced a distance of 83.93 metres to land inside the top 12 performances from the two qualification groups.
Walcott was ninth overall and fifth in group A, which was topped by German Julius Weber (87.21m), with Poland’s Dawid Wegner next (85.67) and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra of India (84.85) all able to surpass the automatic qualification mark. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch produced a season’s best throw of 84.11 to slip into the final just ahead of Walcott. Sachin Yadav of India was the 6th athlete to advance from group A after landing his spear 83.67 metres.
T&T sprinter Leah Bertrand did not advance beyond the preliminary round of the women’s 200m this morning.
Bertrand placed sixth in heat four, clocking 23.33 seconds, and was well outside the top three to progress automatically to the semi-finals. Those spots went to the USA’s Brittany Brown, who won in 22.50, while Bahamian Antonique Strachan placed second in 22.57 seconds. Third went to Great Britain’s Daryll Neita.
