With the Primary Schools Football League National Championships coming to a close Wednesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, excitement is building.
The first game of the day will feature the undefeated Arima Boys’ RC in the Under-12 category against the unbeaten Port-of-Spain and Environs winners, Nelson Street Boys’ RC School.
The Arima Boys’ RC are the U-12 and U-15 Ministry of Education’s St George East District champions. The U-12 footballers prevailed 3-0 against Santa Cruz RC, while the U-15 footballers won 4-3 against Febeau Government.
Arima Boys’ RC is the only school with two teams competing in the finals, and based on their form, they look likely to have a great day in Couva Wednesday.
Special thanks to Principal Navin Harry, members of his staff, the coaches as well as sponsor, Homes Restaurant.
Meanwhile, Nelson Street Boys’ RC is coming off a tough week, having lost their U-15 semifinal to Egypt Govt Primary School 3-2 last week at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.
Coaches Stefan Gopie and Curtis Orr have worked long and hard for this championship, and the U-15 loss has fuelled their determination. They have their U-12 team set to fight for the Trinidad title and are ready to give Arima Boys’ RC a memorable battle.
The second match on the National Primary Schools Football League series will be the girls’ final between Dow Village Government and Pleasantville Government.
Dow Village Girls won their semifinal game against St Patrick champion, La Brea RC. Many are expecting the Caroni champion to get the better of the Victoria champion. This is going to be a really good game, and it could come down to a penalty kick shootout. The two teams are so evenly matched that it is difficult to call.
The final match of the day will pit the improving Egypt Govt against the powerful Arima Boys’ RC in the Under-15 Boys’ final.
Egypt Govt got the better of Nelson Street Boys’ RC last week after being down 0-2. They played with purpose, came back fighting, and never slowed down until the game was over. They are expected to pose a serious challenge to the former champion.
Arima Boys’ RC, on the other hand, has won all its matches easily. In the semifinal, they easily beat South Eastern champion, St Mary’s Govt, 11-0 to secure their spot. The Arima Boys’ RC school has talent, and after watching how easily they defeated St Mary’s, it is difficult to see them being beaten in the final.
Yohan Robinson is the player whom Egypt Govt will be looking to contain, after he scored six times (beginning in the fifth minute and ending in the 49th minute) in the semifinal. Nazism Martinez, who scored three goals in the semifinal, will also be seeking to ensure victory for the East Zone champions.
Best of luck to all teams competing Wednesday in the National Primary School Football League!
