Amari Ash and Cherelle Thompson claimed the gold medal for T&T on the final night of the swimming segment of the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Championship at the National Aquatic Centre, Wildey, St Michael, Barbados, on Tuesday.
In addition to Ash and Thompson, the 13-14 Boys' 4x100 medley relay quartet added silver while Graham Chatoor and Josiah Parag got bronze.
The 12-year-old Ash captured her first-ever individual CCCAN gold when she won the 11-12 Girls' 50m freestyle in 28.37 seconds to beat Dominican Republic's Alejandra Santana (28.60) and Bermudan Imojen Judd and Bella Howes (28.70) into second and joint third respectively.
Thompson, 26, swam to gold in the 18 & Over Girls' 50m freestyle with a time of 26.08 seconds, well ahead Bermudan Madelyn Moore (26.72) and Panama's Cathy Cooper (26.87).
The 13-14 Boys' 4x100m medley relay quartet of Johann Matamoro, Riquelio Joseph, Zarek Wilson and Nikoli Blackman combined for silver in four minutes, 13.64, well behind record-breakers Mexico, who set a new mark of 4:03.66 minutes to erase Venezuela's 2005 time of 4:05.63, while Jamaica got bronze in 4:15.93.
Chatoor, 18, was a joint third-placed finisher in the 18 & Over Boys' 400m freestyle in four-minutes, 06.94 seconds with Mexican Axxel Salgado Salinas behind Barbadian Alex Sobers, who won in 3:59.74 and Antigua and Barbuda's Noah Mascoll-Gomes (4:06.58).
Parag, 18, bagged bronze in the 18 & Over Boys' 200m backstroke in two minutes, 12.84 seconds to trail Barbadian Nicky Neckles (2:09.08) and Mexican Carlos Godinez Garcia (2:11.92) while T&T's other finalist, Kegan Ford, ended seventh in 2:37.26.
Overall, T&T ended with a total of 23 medals (four gold, six silver and 13 bronze) over the five days of swimming.
Wednesday marked the start of the Open Water competition at Carlisle Bay and T&T's Amelia Rajack and Zachary Anthony were among the medals.
Competing in the 11-13 Girls' 3k, Rajack got silver while Anthony added a bronze in the 11-13 Boys' 3k.
Speaking on the team's performance in the pool, T&T head coach Brian Wickham said in general, the technical team was happy with the display.
He said: "We the coaches are very happy with performances because it's the first time in so many years Mexico, Panama and Honduras came out in full force and our swimmers were able to put up good performances against them. It was an uphill battle to claim the swimming title but we continue to improve on times from a number of our swimmers and that was an important showing for us."
Looking ahead, Wickham said with the reintroduction of the Latin American countries back into the CCCAN fold, its a wake-up call for our local coaches to up the ante.
On Friday, the 10k Open Water event will come off at Carlisle Bay.
