Tobagonian Makeda Bain won the first of her three finals in the Sagicor Junior Tennis Tournament when she swept aside Cherdine Sylvester in the Girls 14 and Under Singles decider at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua Wednesday.
Bain, the top-ranked player in the draw, had little trouble against Sylvester and came away with a 6-3, 6-2 win under the scorching sunshine.
Earlier on, in the first set of matches on court, Bain won from Abba Campbell-Smith 6-4, 3-0 after the latter retired in the second set in their semifinal, while Sylvester eased past Suri Ramcharan 6-2, 6-2.
The win for Bain against Sylvester was the second in as many meetings; on the day after, she also won their Girls 16 and Under semifinals 6-3, 6-2 and will next play Madison Khan in the final today, after the latter humbled Cyra Ramcharan 6-0, 6-3.
And in her final match of the day, Bain combined with Khan to defeat Anneleise Orr and Sylvester 6-1, 6-0 in the Senior Girls Doubles final four, while the Ramcharan sisters, Cyra and Suri, outclassed Laura-Li Maillard and Charis Salina 6-1, 6-1 in the other.
Josiah Hills also reached three finals when he booked a spot in the Boys 16 and Under and 18 and Under singles finals, as well as the Senior Boys Doubles championship match.
In the Boys 16 and Under semifinals, top-ranked Hills defeated sixth-ranked Jack Brown 6-4, 6-2 and will come up against second-ranked Christopher Khan in the final, after the latter stopped fourth-ranked Novak Malcolm 6-3, 6-1.
Hills also brushed aside Brown in their Boys 18 and Under semifinals 6-1, 6-1 and also faces Khan in the final following the latter’s win by walkover against Jacob Jacelon.
The workmanlike Hills then contested the Senior Boys Doubles semifinal alongside Khan, and the duo secured a spot in the final, their third, after blanking Oshea John and Kitwana Ramkissoon-Henry 6-0, 6-0.
In the final, Hills and Khan will meet Jack Brown and Jacob Jacelon, who dumped Deron Dumas and Darius Rahaman. 6-2, 6-3.
However, the unranked Malcolm continued his surprising run in the Boys 14 and Under category when he won his semifinals against St Kitts/Nevis, Tzuriel Perciva, the second seed, 6-3, 6-0 to set up a final with St Lucian Denney Estava, the top seed, who won his final-four battle with the third seed, Gabriel Mansoor, 6-3, 2-6, 11-9.
Malcolm is also through to the Boys 14 and Under Doubles final after he paired with countryman Gabriel Mansoor to defeat Rohan Ramcharitar and his brother Sanjay Ramcharitar in an all-T&T affair, 7-6(5), 6-3, and next faces Eli Paty and Cruz Thornton, who overcame Denney Estava and Tahj Goodman 7-6(2), 6-1.
In the Boys 12 and Under age group, Ethan Primus will contest two finals as well after he won his singles semifinals over Harrison Hadeed 4-0, 2-4, 10-6, while Nicholas McLetchie beat Riley Smith 4-2, 5-7 (7).
And in the Boys 12 and Under Doubles semifinals, Primus partnered Austin Ward to oust Malik Bain and Ricky Justin 4-1, 4-1 to set up a final against Kimari Felix and Smith, who won by walkover from Oliver Khan and Nicholas McLetchie.
