T&T cyclist Teniel Campbell won her second gold medal at the Caribbean Cycling Championships Sunday (October 12) in Belize.
Following her triumph in the Elite Women's Time Trial event on Saturday (October 11), Campbell, the only female rider from T&T and the Caribbean to compete at the Tour de France Femmes, returned to the road to clinch the gold medal in the Road Race. The race was a gruelling 108-kilometre grind that started at 8 am on Sunday.
Campbell sealed the gold medal in a time of three hours, five minutes, and 20 seconds to get the better of Gabriella Arnold of Bermuda, crossing the finish line after three hours, five minutes, and 51 seconds. Arnold was a third-place finisher in the time trial but would be happy to have improved on the colour of her medal.
Evelyn Diaz Matos of Cuba produced a battling display to secure the bronze medal after her time of three hours, seven minutes, and 59 seconds proved to be sufficient.
With the results, Campbell secured a spot for the country to compete at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games to be held next year in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from July 24 to August 8.
The president of the T&T Cycling Federation, Rowena Williams, said on Saturday that they left T&T on a mission to win medals and qualify for the CAC Games, which is what Campbell did on Saturday, and she expected Campbell to continue in the same trend yesterday. Williams described Campbell as being in a different class to her competitors in the Caribbean.
Berenice Paul of Guadeloupe took the fourth-place spot after three hours, nine minutes, and 54 seconds, with Llori Sharpe, the Jamaican who secured the silver medal in the time trial in a time of 31 minutes and 58.0 seconds, storming home in fifth position yesterday in three hours, 19 minutes, and 53 seconds.
Meanwhile, the country was scheduled to be represented by four riders for the men’s road race Sunday, namely Jadian Neaves, Liam Trepte, who placed 11th in the time trial the day before, Tariq Woods, and Akil Campbell, the brother of Teniel Campbell, who was fifth in the time trial, however, up to press time last night, no results were forthcoming following a late start to the event.
