Luke Correia scored a pair of goals as defending National Inter-Col champions Fatima College blanked visitors Trinity College East 4-0 to move within a win of ending their 45-year National Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Boys’ Premier Division title drought at Fatima College Ground, Mucurapo Road on Wednesday.
Going into the round 13 fixture, Hutson Charles-coached two-time (1973 & 1978) national league champions Fatima College led the 16-team table with 31 points, five ahead of the surging defending champions St Benedict’s College and San Juan North Secondary, and at the half-time whistle at Mucurapo they were well on their way to maintaining their cushion at the top of the standings with two rounds of matches left to play.
In the end, the consistent Michael Chaves, and last year’s title-winning captain Christian Bailey also netted to secure an 11th win in 13 matches to push their points tally to 34 from 13 matches, ahead of their meeting with four-time winners Naparima College in San Fernando on Saturday, before their final match of the season away to strugglers St Mary’s College.
With only two rounds of matches left to complete the season, the race for the title is now a three-team one with St Benedict’s and San Juan North the only teams that can catch Fatima, as they both have 29 points while fourth-placed Naparima has 27.
At the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Training Field, Marabella, St Benedict’s kept up its slim hopes of retaining its title with an emphatic 8-0 hammering of relegated Pleasantville Secondary led by two goals each from Jeremiah Niles, and Daniel Jones.
The quartet of Malacai Webb, Jaden Grant, Josiah Ochoa, and Ethan Trotman were also on target for the Randolph Boyce-coached St Benedict’s who after starting the season with two straight defeats have made steady progress up the table to be in within a chance of retaining their crown with two matches left to play against Trinity College East, and Malick Secondary, respectively, no easy match-ups by no means.
San Juan North Secondary Ground, Bourg Mulatresse, San Juan, the Jerry Moe-coached hosts got goals from Jaheem Danclair, Lindell Sween, Jahdel Chase-Charles, and Jadiel Joseph to whip St Mary’s College 4-1 and also improved to 29 points, ahead of their two remaining matches versus East Mucurapo Secondary, and Chaguanas North Secondary.
In other matches, four-time winners Naparima College stayed fourth with 27 points after a 4-1 victory over Queen’s Royal College while Presentation College of San Fernando eked out a 1-0 win over St Anthony’s College, and Arima North Secondary swept aside relegated Bishop’s High 4-0.
There was also a 5-1 victory for Malick Secondary against rivals East Mucurapo Secondary while Chaguanas North Secondary completed the line-up of the three teams to be demoted at the end of the season, despite a 1-1 draw with Speyside Secondary.
