Luke Cor­reia scored a pair of goals as de­fend­ing Na­tion­al In­ter-Col cham­pi­ons Fa­ti­ma Col­lege blanked vis­i­tors Trin­i­ty Col­lege East 4-0 to move with­in a win of end­ing their 45-year Na­tion­al Sec­ondary Schools Foot­ball League (SS­FL) Boys’ Pre­mier Di­vi­sion ti­tle drought at Fa­ti­ma Col­lege Ground, Mu­cu­rapo Road on Wednes­day.

Go­ing in­to the round 13 fix­ture, Hut­son Charles-coached two-time (1973 & 1978) na­tion­al league cham­pi­ons Fa­ti­ma Col­lege led the 16-team ta­ble with 31 points, five ahead of the surg­ing de­fend­ing cham­pi­ons St Bene­dict’s Col­lege and San Juan North Sec­ondary, and at the half-time whis­tle at Mu­cu­rapo they were well on their way to main­tain­ing their cush­ion at the top of the stand­ings with two rounds of match­es left to play.

In the end, the con­sis­tent Michael Chaves, and last year’s ti­tle-win­ning cap­tain Chris­t­ian Bai­ley al­so net­ted to se­cure an 11th win in 13 match­es to push their points tal­ly to 34 from 13 match­es, ahead of their meet­ing with four-time win­ners Na­pari­ma Col­lege in San Fer­nan­do on Sat­ur­day, be­fore their fi­nal match of the sea­son away to strug­glers St Mary’s Col­lege.

With on­ly two rounds of match­es left to com­plete the sea­son, the race for the ti­tle is now a three-team one with St Bene­dict’s and San Juan North the on­ly teams that can catch Fa­ti­ma, as they both have 29 points while fourth-placed Na­pari­ma has 27.

At the Man­nie Ramjohn Sta­di­um, Train­ing Field, Mara­bel­la, St Bene­dict’s kept up its slim hopes of re­tain­ing its ti­tle with an em­phat­ic 8-0 ham­mer­ing of rel­e­gat­ed Pleas­antville Sec­ondary led by two goals each from Je­re­mi­ah Niles, and Daniel Jones.

The quar­tet of Mala­cai Webb, Jaden Grant, Josi­ah Ochoa, and Ethan Trot­man were al­so on tar­get for the Ran­dolph Boyce-coached St Bene­dict’s who af­ter start­ing the sea­son with two straight de­feats have made steady progress up the ta­ble to be in with­in a chance of re­tain­ing their crown with two match­es left to play against Trin­i­ty Col­lege East, and Mal­ick Sec­ondary, re­spec­tive­ly, no easy match-ups by no means.

San Juan North Sec­ondary Ground, Bourg Mu­la­tresse, San Juan, the Jer­ry Moe-coached hosts got goals from Ja­heem Dan­clair, Lin­dell Sween, Jahdel Chase-Charles, and Jadiel Joseph to whip St Mary’s Col­lege 4-1 and al­so im­proved to 29 points, ahead of their two re­main­ing match­es ver­sus East Mu­cu­rapo Sec­ondary, and Ch­agua­nas North Sec­ondary.

In oth­er match­es, four-time win­ners Na­pari­ma Col­lege stayed fourth with 27 points af­ter a 4-1 vic­to­ry over Queen’s Roy­al Col­lege while Pre­sen­ta­tion Col­lege of San Fer­nan­do eked out a 1-0 win over St An­tho­ny’s Col­lege, and Ari­ma North Sec­ondary swept aside rel­e­gat­ed Bish­op’s High 4-0.

There was al­so a 5-1 vic­to­ry for Mal­ick Sec­ondary against ri­vals East Mu­cu­rapo Sec­ondary while Ch­agua­nas North Sec­ondary com­plet­ed the line-up of the three teams to be de­mot­ed at the end of the sea­son, de­spite a 1-1 draw with Spey­side Sec­ondary.
