Former educator and football administrator Azaad Mohammed-Khan is in urgent need of public assistance as he continues to battle a serious neuromuscular and respiratory condition that has left him hospitalised for months and dependent on long-term medical care.
Mohammed-Khan was recently transferred from the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, to a regular ward at the Arima Hospital. This follows two and a half months in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and HDU after he was rushed to emergency care, unresponsive. His daughter, Jamila Mohammed-Khan, confirmed that although he has begun to stabilise, he requires extensive rehabilitation, daily monitoring, and specialised equipment before he can safely return home.
Doctors have informed the family that his recovery will need respiratory physiotherapy, physical therapy, and continuous nursing care due to limitations with breathing and eating, his two most critical challenges. He recently regained limited speech after nearly three months, communicating with the aid of a tracheostomy device, but remains on a ventilator.
To prepare for his discharge and ensure proper home care, the family must secure several essential items, including a suction machine and catheters, an electronic hospital bed, a pressure-relief mattress, a commode, a walker, oxygen supplies, and consumables required to maintain the tracheostomy. Furthermore, a respiratory therapist, a physical therapist, and full-time nurses are required, day and night, as Mohammed-Khan cannot be left unattended.
Jamila initially estimated the cost of care at TT $200,000, but she now believes the total may exceed that amount as additional needs arise. She said the situation has created significant emotional and financial strain, as she balances being his next of kin and primary decision-maker with her full-time job. She continues to receive support from her mother, Camille Agard-Quimbie, as well as relatives and members of the sporting community.
The family is hoping to raise urgent funds by December 5, 2025, to cover immediate medical expenses and begin preparing the necessary home environment for his recovery. They also welcome assistance from medical professionals, including neurologists and doctors who can help with long-term supervision and emergencies.
Mohammed-Khan is widely respected for his decades of service. Many know him from his years at Malick Secondary School as a teacher, dean, and vice principal. He also made significant contributions to football, serving as general secretary of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), managing teams at the T&T Football Association (TTFA), and later acting as chief executive officer (CEO) of San Juan Jabloteh Football Club—supporting generations of young athletes, coaches, and students across T&T.
