Five goals from instrumental striker Nikita Gosine spearheaded a successful defence of their Girls Championships Big Five Play-Off title for Pleasantville Secondary at Lewis Street in San Fernando with a more-than-convincing 12-0 victory over Chaguanas South Secondary School, Sunday.
Gosine, properly fine-tuned from her time with the senior national women’s team, which will head into World Cup Qualifiers later this month, was unstoppable, as her goals helped her team secure a semifinal spot in the Big Five tournament.
Apart from Gosine, there was a hat-trick from her sister Natalia Gosine, as well as double strikes coming from Khairiyah Fortune and Zara Chase. Pleasantville whipped Five Rivers Secondary for the Big Five title last year, but their attempt for the National InterCol title did not materialise, as St Joseph’s Convent of Port-of-Spain beat them in the final.
Manager Allison Quashie-Boucher was happy with the result but said it was a victory they expected.
“Last year we won the Big Five but lost to St Joseph’s Convent, Port-of-Spain in the InterCol, so this year we want to do the double,” Quashie-Boucher said.
With just four teams in the South Zone Championships Division, the Pleasantville girls have won all their matches.
They are now eagerly anticipating a showdown with St Joseph’s Convent in a semifinal clash on Thursday at St Mary’s College Ground in St Clair. Quashie-Boucher told Guardian Media Sports soon after the victory yesterday that her girls have been boosted by their 2-1 victory over them for the Super Cup title at the beginning of the season.
“Once we play together as a unit, we will be fine for the victory. We know that they will be coming to try and neutralise our powerful attacking force, so we have to stick to our game plan and play disciplined football,” Quashie-Boucher explained.
Pleasantville played against three other teams in the Championship Division of the South Zone: St Stephen’s, St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando, and Moruga Secondary.
