The four-woman team of Kayanna Mayers, Rayann Sheppard, Tyra Titte and Anaya Pope, riding for the Rigtech Sonics, sprinted to the gold medal and the national title on Wednesday (May 7) when the T&T Cycling Federation held its National Track Cycling Championships at the National Cycling Centre in Balmain, Couva.
Contesting the 2-kilometre Team Pursuit event, which is the equivalent of eight laps of the track, the quartet, led by Mayers, completed their ride in three minutes, 23.65 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Valkyries' four-man team of Elijah James, Cyril Fook, Maurice Lopez and rising talent Elisha Greene Jr held off a charge by the Rigtech Sonics' foursome of Lawrence La Four, Walter Paul, Jeduthum Henry and Josiah Prince for the national title among the men in the team pursuit.
In a showdown for bragging rights and either the gold or silver medal, the Valkyries men reigned supreme after crossing the finish line in a time of two minutes, 40.99 seconds, to defeat their opponents, who managed to get over the line in a time of three minutes, 03.58 seconds for second spot.
The event, held for riders in the tinymites, juvenile and masters' categories, also saw Fook receiving two national titles on the day. The veteran rider who has been making waves despite his entry into the masters, got his second title in the master's 60-plus category of the Scratch race, which required him and his team to pedal a distance of 4.5 kilometres or 18 laps.
There were also national titles for the team of Greene Jr, Adiose Lewis, Adrian Sanchez and Judethun Henry in the tinymites men's scratch race; the team of Sheppard, Kylee Young, Shameka Hoyte and Ella Marie Young in the juvenile women's 5 kilometre (20 laps) scratch race; and Kafele Desormeaux, Maurice Lopez, Elijah James and Liam Lovell who secured the juvenile men's juvenile men's 7.5 kilometre (30 laps) scratch race.
Meanwhile, the trio of Mayers, Pope and Sheppard earned their second title of the Championships by getting the better of Kermyah Julien, Christa-Marie Julien and Kylee Young for the 750-metre team sprint women's crown. They posted a time of 1:04.78 seconds, riding for Rigtech Sonics.
In the men's version of the race, the team sprint title went to the trio of Elijah James, Maurice Lopez and Greene Jr, who defeated the team of La Four, Henry and Josiah Prince in a final race which was contested over three laps.
