T&T’s Mark Ramoutar proved unbeatable, recording 8.216 seconds on his Suzuki Hayabusa, the fastest motorbike of the day. That time was also good enough for a new overall track record at the Frankie Boodram International Raceway, Wallerfield, in the third and final leg of the three-event Wallerfield Cup Finals (WCF) drag racing event, from July 26-27.
Ramoutar blew away the competition in the open bracket, winning ahead of Shawn Daniel, who placed second on his Kawasaki, while Garvin Gomez, also racing a Kawasaki, placed third.
In the 9-second bikes bracket, Pierce Debideen ran his Suzuki to top the field, which included Danny Daniel in second and Janelle Albarado in third.
Over 70 cars also competed across multiple classes on the WCF's closing weekend, each producing several spectacular and history-making performances that were witnessed by some 3,000 motorsport fans.
Guyana's Rameez Mohammed stole the spotlight on Day Two of the event by taking home the title for the fastest car of the final leg, blazing down the strip in his Ford Mustang with a blistering 8.329-second run.
It was a successful return to the track for Mohammed and his team after a major wreck in Guyana a few years ago. Since then, the car has undergone a complete rebuild.
Meanwhile, Celeste Gajadhar was one of the top performers and the only female finalist in her category. She stunned the men in the field with a masterful run on Sunday, which saw her win the 13-second bracket in her white Mitsubishi Evolution X. Gajadhar beat Darrin Chung, who placed second in the division in his Holden Kingswood. Damian Allum placed third in the bracket in his Honda Civic.
Legendary T&T drag racer, Sheldon Bissessar, placed second in the open division, beaten by Navin Maraj in his Nissan Skyline. However, an eagerly anticipated clash against the crowd favourite, Ram and Sons fish van, was unfortunately sidelined due to mechanical issues experienced by the latter competitor.
Still, the energy and action never let up as competitors continued with solid executions to bring the curtains down on the series.
Following previous events from April 26-27 (Round 1) and May 31-June 1 (Round 2) at the same venue, Rezan Ogeer, Director of SGI Media and event organiser, said, “With every round of the Wallerfield Cup, we’re not just racing—we’re building a culture. This weekend showed how powerful motorsport can be when it’s brought to the people.”
President of the T&T Autosports Association, Ashton Eligon, was also full of praise for the event and said, "To see over 70 cars and thousands of fans engaged in regulated, competitive racing is exactly the direction we want to see for the sport in Trinidad and Tobago.”
