T&T’s Daneil Williams and Daynte Stewart ended their volleyball season on a high by claiming the bronze medal in the men’s competition at the sixth and final stop of the 2018 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit in Pointe Du-Marin, Saint Anne, Martinique, yesterday.
The T&T duo, top seeds for the tournament outplayed El Salvadoreans, Carlos Escobar and David Vargas 21-13, 21-18 in 35 minutes.
It was the third ever bronze medal for Williams on the tour to go with a silver while it was the first medal for Stewart, who made his tour debut this year.
Earlier in the morning period, Williams and Stewart defeated Canada-B duo, Adam Thompson, and Iva Reka, 21-13, 23-21 in their quarterfinal in 46 minutes before losing out to Puerto Ricans, Cristian Encarnacion and Juan Ribas in their semifinal, 21-19, 15-21, 9-15.
Encarnacion and Ribas went on to take the gold medal beating USA’s Benjamin Vaught and Travis Mewhitter 16-21, 21-17, 15-10.
Vaught and Mewhitter beat Escobar and Vargas 21-15, 21-15 in the other semifinal.
In the women’s segment, USA-B duo, Katherine Spieler and Karissa Cook took the gold medal after beating Canada-A’s Sophie Bukovec and Alexandra Poletto also in three sets, 21-18, 20-22, 15-12.
This after the Canadians survived a match point in the second set before taking the set to extend the match.
In the semifinals, Spieler and Cook overcame Puerto Rico’s Allanis Navas Sanchez and Maria Gonzalez 17-21, 21-18, 15-10 and Bukovec and Poletto defeated country women Amanda Harnett and Marie-Christine Lapointe 21-16, 21-15.
Harnett and Lapointe got bronze after beating Sanchez and Gonzalez, 21-18, 11-21, 15-13.
T&T’s Rheeza Grant and Abby Black man defeated Martinique ‘s Frederique Soton and Estelle Le Pelley 21-12, 21-11 in their playoff for 11th and were due to meet another Martinique pair, Christine Alamelou and Vanessa Zamord in the battle for ninth spot in the final match of the day, while in the men’s Costa Rica and Costa Rica and Canada-B met for fifth spot.
