T&T men’s beach volleyball pair Daneil Williams and Fabien Whitfield ended the first day of the third leg of the 2023 North, Central American, and Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA) Beach Volleyball Tour, the Security Centre Beach Volleyball Tournament hosted by the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation with a 2-0 win-loss record in their five-team Pool B qualifiers on Friday.
Playing at the sun-soaked Seven Miles Public Beach, Grand Cayman, the 'Toco Boys" as Williams and Whitfield are known did not have it easy though as they first needed the maximum three sets to get the better of Haitians Olando Joseph and Irvens Benjamin, 19-21,21-7, 15-3, in 40 minutes before they defeated St Kitts/Nevis pair St Clair Hodge and Shawn Seabrokes, 21-13, 21-14.
In the other matches in Pool B, group favourites, Mexicans Juan Virgen and Miguel Sarabia, the runner-up in the first leg and perennial title contenders defeated Anguillans Da’Qwan Fredericks and Aiden Hazzard (21-10, 21-7) and Joseph and Benjamin (21-6, 21-10), to also end the day with a perfect 2-0 record and a share of top spot with the T&T pair ahead of their final round clash Saturday in what is expected to be the pool decider for first and second places.
In the two other matches played in Pool B, Hodge and Seabrokes beat Hazzard, and Fredericks 21-3, 21-8, while Joseph and Benjamin also swept past Hazzard and Fredericks 21-10, 21-8 for their first win in three matches on the day.
The T&T duo are seeking an improvement and a possible podium finish on their seventh-placed finish from the second leg in Varadero, Cuba after placing 13th of 17 teams in the opening leg in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
