Girls display their tech power

Con­grat­u­la­tions are in or­der for the win­ning teams of the Dig­i­cel Foun­da­tion’s Girls Pow­er Tech 2021. Of the ten com­pet­ing teams, three emerged vic­to­ri­ous at the end of the Hackathon on day two.

The hackathon, which is a main fea­ture of the GPT event, chal­lenges young women to brain­storm and de­vel­op tech­nol­o­gy-based so­lu­tions for so­cial chal­lenges.

The top­ics this year fo­cussed on re­new­able en­er­gy and en­er­gy so­lu­tions, ed­u­ca­tion, re­viv­ing small busi­ness­es and gen­der-based vi­o­lence.

Last week, the girls who formed the win­ning teams paid a cour­tesy vis­it to Dig­i­cel in C3, San Fer­nan­do to re­ceive their well-de­served prizes which ranged from Snapchat spec­ta­cles to smart face track­ing tripods to self­ie ring lights.

Ad­di­tion­al­ly, three girls al­so re­ceived MVP to­kens for demon­strat­ing lead­er­ship and pos­i­tive team spir­it dur­ing the com­pe­ti­tion. The first 30 teams to reg­is­ter all re­ceived a mi­ni self­ie light as to­kens, cour­tesy of the Dig­i­cel Foun­da­tion.

Dig­i­cel Busi­ness gen­er­al man­ag­er Lau­rence Mod­este, Dig­i­cel Foun­da­tion CEO Pen­ny Gomez and LoopTT con­tent man­ag­er Nneka Parsan­lal were on hand to in­ter­act with the girls and al­so, to ex­tend con­grat­u­la­tions. All COVID-19 pro­to­cols were ob­served.

Ten teams of 50 young women, be­tween the ages of 13 to 18 years, par­tic­i­pat­ed in Dig­i­cel Foun­da­tion’s GPT 2021.

The two-day vir­tu­al event was host­ed vir­tu­al­ly via Cae­sar’s Army An­til­lea World via Mi­crosoft’s Alt­space and Mi­crosoft teams.

GPT 2021 was host­ed by Dig­i­cel Foun­da­tion and spon­sored by Dig­i­cel Busi­ness, Shell T&T Ltd and LoopTT.
