Meetra Chaitram will spend the next four years in jail for beating his wife and breaching a protection order.
The 46-year-old father of five pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.
Chaitram said he was stressed and frustrated but his wife said he was angry because she got a job.
She told magistrate Alicia Chankar that he repeatedly accused her of being unfaithful. The incident took place on Monday evening.
Court prosecutor Cleyon Seedan said around 5.45 pm, the 35-year-old woman was at her Debe home when Chaitram accused her of being unfaithful.
He then dealt her several blows about her head and body. She made a report at the San Fernando Police Station and produced her protection order against him dated July 2016.
It will expire in six months. She received medical treatment at the San Fernando General Hospital. Constable Anderson Maingot arrested and charged Chaitram with assaulting his wife by beating her and breaching the protection order.
Asked by the magistrate what the protection order meant, Chaitram said he was not to interfere with or lash her.
He said he and his wife started a job “dealing with cupboards” in November to make some money for Christmas.
However, he said this wife found another job and left him to do everything. “I did not hit her much, “ he said when told that his wife suffered visible injuries.
The magistrate told him he was not supposed to hit her at all. His wife, who was in court, said she and her son worked with him but they were not paid a salary.
She complained that since she got the job he has been cursing her and accusing her of being involved with other men.
The woman could not understand why he had a problem with her bringing in a regular income. The wife said it was not the first time he beat her.
She said her son got some lash too when he tried to help her. She said her husband even pulled out some of her hair.
The magistrate sentenced him to 24 months on each charge. The magistrate ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
