T&T’s Makeda Bain continued her rich vein of form when she breezed into the semiinals of the Girls Under-14 Singles in the Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC)-Trinidad International Junior (U-14) Tennis Tournament at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, Monday.
The winner of the singles title and doubles with Suriname’s Cybelle Ferrier in the Barbados leg of the competition last weekend at the Raymond Forde National Tennis Centre in St Michael, Bain stayed on course for the girls U-14 singles crown on home soil when she swept past Sofia Gutierrez of El Salvador 6-1, 6-1 in her quarterfinal and will face countrywoman Cherdine Sylvester in the semifinals today after the latter humbled St Vincent and The Grenadines’ Danelle Kennedy 6-1, 6-2.
On the other side of the draw, the second-ranked Cyra Ramcharan, the runner-up to Bain in Barbados last week, whipped fellow T&T player Karissa Mohammed 6-3, 6-1 in her quarterfinal to set up a meeting with Ferrier, who won her quarterfinal 6-0, 6-0 over local entrant Samiyah Mohammed.
Also at Tacarigua, in the Trinity Juniors Under-12 Trinity Cup, top-ranked Eli Paty and Dhruv Rambhajan set up a meeting for the Boys U-12 Singles title, while in the Girls Under-12 championship match, top-seeded Teijha Wellington faces Anaya Roberts.
This was after Paty whipped Ethan Primus 6-1, 6-1, and Rambhajan upstaged second-ranked Austin Ward 6-2, 6-3 in the boys semifinals.
Paty will also contest the doubles final with Ryan Steuart after they beat Harrison Hadeed and Dhruv Rambhajan 6-0, 6-3 in their semifinal, while Primus and Austin Ward stopped Malik Bain and Holden Hadeed 6-4, 7-5 in the other.
Wellington, the runner-up in Barbados last weekend, overcame St Vincent and the Grenadines Nakayda Cain 6-4, 6-0, while Roberts, the daughter of former Minister of Sports Anil Roberts, humbled second-ranked Barbadian Ava Warner 6-0, 4-6, 10-5.

T&T’s Shiloh Walker and Nirav Dougdeen enjoyed mixed results in their opening matches when the J30 International Tennis Federation World Tennis Tour Tournament served off at the Raymond Forde National Tennis Centre in St Michael, Barbados, yesterday.
Walker advance to the second round of the girls draw when she battled past Micah Austin 6-4, 6-4 and will meet Canada’s Jolie Mastre for a spot in the quarterfinals while Dougdeen, the lone T&T player in the draw went under to Great Britain’s Levi Taylor 1-6, 0-6.
