Infrastructural work will begin soon on a number of venues across Tobago including Shaw Park Recreation Ground, which is set for a major overhaul, with the demolition and reconstruction of the Division’s Sport Administration offices.
This was announced in a release by the Division of Sport and Youth Affairs last Friday. The release stated that it recognises the importance of sports infrastructure across the island and to ensure that athletes and sporting bodies have access to quality sporting facilities, it has implemented a facilities management programme.
The upgrade project of the Shaw Park facility, which has a four-month timeline, will include works on the office of the Director of Sport, a conference and meeting room and a VIP viewing area. The roof of the Shaw Park Basketball Court pavilion will also be upgraded with work on the roof expected to be completed in two weeks. The works were expected to commence yesterday.
The Roxborough Recreational Complex is also scheduled for significant upgrade. Phase One restoration works were carded to start yesterday and will be completed within three months. Phase One includes the removal of sheeting and repair to the railings and steel frames at the pavilion. During this period, the use of the venue will be limited. To book the venue, the public can contact the Department of Sport at 612-3792 ext. 1006.
Residents of Patience Hill will also enjoy a safer sporting experience, with a new perimeter fence at the playing field.
The release said: "The Division of Sport and Youth Affairs remains committed to developing infrastructure that will redound to the benefit of sport on the island, and by extension, the people of Tobago."
