Curtis Humphreys of the University of T&T and Guyana's Trenace Lowe were crowned new champions of the men's and women's Open Divisions of the Silver Bowl Tournament hosted by the T&T Table Tennis Association on Sunday. The one-day event was contested at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Chaguanas.
Humphreys, the top-ranked local men's player, took the men's title left vacant by Reeza Burke when he came from a set down to beat Solo Crusaders' Anthony "Sandfly" Brown, 12–14, 11–7, 11–8, 9–11, 11–8. In the semifinals, Humphreys also came from behind to humble teenager Aaron Wilson of Carenage Blasters, 6–11, 11–9, 11–7, 11–5 while Brown made light work of veteran Lionel Darceuil, 11–4, 11–7,11–6. Humphreys had earlier turned back high flying Anson Wellington, 8–11, 15–13, 11–8, 13–11, in the quarterfinals, while Brown beat Everton Sorzano, 10–12, 8–11, 11–6, 11–8, 11–5; Wilson outgunned fellow teenager Arun Roopnarine, 8–11, 15–13, 11–8, 13–11, and Darceuil overwhelmed Kenwin Small, 11–4, 11–7, 5–11, 11–5.
The top-ranked Humphreys also contested the round-of-16 after a round-robin group bye and dispatched Andrew Edwards, 11–6, 11–7, 8–11, 11–6. In the other round-of-16 results, Darceuil battled past Terry Corbin, 5–11, 13–11, 11–9, 8–11, 14–12; Wilson whipped Kyle Borneo, 11–8, 11–4, 11–4; Brown outlasted Kyle Bennett, 11–7, 5–11, 5–11, 11–6, 11–3; Sorzano overcame Kwame Rodriguez, 8–11, 11–5, 15–13, 3–11, 11–4; Small upstaged Terrell Abbott, 11–4, 7–11, 12–10, 11–7; Wellington stunned last year's beaten finalist, Andrew Alexander, 11–5, 11–3, 11–5 and Roopnarine stopped Alaric Humphreys, 11–9, 9–11, 11–8, 11–7. In the women's decider, T&T's top-ranked Aleena Edwards had to settle for second spot for the second straight year after losing, 5–11, 9–11, 6–11, to Lowe.
Prior to her win over Aleena, Lowe had beaten Aleena's mother Verna Edwards of Gladiators, 11–5, 11–8, 9–11, 11–4, in her semifinal while Edwards cruised past Hawks' Linda Partap-Boodhan, 11–8, 11–8, 11–9. In the last-eight match-ups, Edwards defeated Brittany Joseph of Hawks, 8–11, 6–11, 11–8, 13–11, 11–6; Verna spanked Artienea Gregoire of Hawks, 11–2, 11–2, 11–6; Lowe slammed fellow Guyanese player Chelsea Edghill, 11–4, 11–4, 11–0 and Partap-Boodhan eased past Catherine Spicer, 11–13, 9–11, 11–8, 11–5. In the round-of-16, Lowe booted Carenage Blasters' Ashley Quashie, 11–9, 12–10, 11–6 and Joseph overcame Gyshan Latchman, 11–7, 11–6, 11–1.
